Abstract
The article deals with the significance of bibliometrics in continuing education. Although bibliometry is not a new topic, new demands arise through new developments. With the emergence of social networks and other online media, altmetrics (alternative metrics) have broadened the spectrum of bibliometrics and the need for further education in that area. Furthermore, a competence model for bibliometric tasks that differentiates three levels - entry level, core area, and specialized area - is introduced and assigned to the different levels of librarianship and careers. The European Summer School for Scientometrics (ESSS), created because of the small number of continuing education courses on bibliometric topics in German-speaking countries, is presented as well as the main places which offer further education in the field of bibliometrics.
