The Cage of the Image and the Trace of the Snail: On the Language of Pictorial Detail

Translated by Michael Thomas Taylor

Friedrich Teja Bach

Abstract

The essay explores potential affinities between the literary genre of the anecdote, on the one hand, and the detail in the visual arts, on the other, by following the trail of the humble snail in a Renaissance painting of the quattrocento. Analyzing the function of the snail motif in Francesco del Cossa’s Annunciation (1470 -1472) in particular, it shows that this detail has the power to reconfigure and yet more powerfully consolidate the fundamental event and implications of incarnation.
