Retracing the historical evolution of the Portuguese address pronoun você using synchronic variationist data

From the book Address in Portuguese and Spanish

  • Gunther Hammermüller

Abstract

This chapter describes the historical evolution of Portuguese address forms based on regional documents from the Inquerito Linguistico Boleo (ILB) recorded from 1942 to 1974 (University of Coimbra). It focuses on regional and social variation of the vossemece-voce family of address forms. The analysis leads to a (hypothetical) diachronic pedigree of these pronouns as well as to a survey of regional speakers’ evaluations of the forms. It concludes that in Portugal there are numerous many-layered islands of address-norm systems that may be understood as a complex system of socioglosses.
