„Der Stand der Frau − Hausfrau“. Hegels Affirmation der bürgerlichen Geschlechterverhältnisse

From the book The Owl's Flight
Dieter Hüning

Abstract

In his classic text on the theory of marriage, Hegel spells out the ethical character of conjugal gender relations. For him, the ethical meaning of marriage can ultimately only be deduced from the state’s interest in this institution. At the same time, Hegel’s doctrine of marriage provides an ideological legitimization of the traditional division of roles between man and woman within marriage, in that Hegel imputes a social function to the natural gender difference, thereby reducing the role of the woman to that of a “housewife”.
