Changing Perspectives: How Art Can Enhance Quality of Life in People Living with Dementia

From the book Arts & Dementia

  • Brigitta Schröder

Abstract

There are different ways of interpreting how dementia develops. While some experts assume that the number of people living with the condition will grow steadily, others think that the aging generation to come will be assessed using a different scale of values. Dementia could, therefore, become less perceptible as a condition, as Professor Gerald Huther (2017) argues in his book entitled Raus aus der Demenzfalle (Escaping from the Dementia Trap). At present, what will develop in the future is not pressingly important, rather what is more crucial is that we master the current situation creatively, in order to foster people’s sense of achievement, which, in turn, will support all concerned and contribute to their Quality of Life. Dementia. Arts. Society. is a research project that plays a fundamental part in achieving this goal. Our society will, hopefully, appreciate this approach and readily enable those affected to experience the form of cooperation outlined above. I hope all those involved in the project will continue working with enthusiasm for a long time to come.
