Abstract
The following article addresses the significance of simulations and model calculations for a digital history. In a first section, the term digital history is questioned in order to arrive at a general definition of digital history as an algorithmically composed approach to the past and algorithmic modeling of systems for the description and exploration of historical processes and states. A second section includes a definition of simulation and model computation as virtual attempts to recreate processes or states with the goal of modeling and testing complex systems. Both areas (digital history and simulation/model computation) are brought together in a concluding third section, with specific attention to the source value and limitations of simulations and model computations of historical processes and states
Zusammenfassung
Der folgende Beitrag thematisiert die Bedeutung von Simulationen und Modellrechnungen für eine digitale Geschichte. Hierfür wird in einem ersten Abschnitt der Begriff Digital History hinterfragt, um letztlich zu einer allgemeinen Definition der digitalen Geschichte als algorithmisch verfasster Annäherung an die Vergangenheit und algorithmische Modellierung von Systemen zur Beschreibung und Exploration historischer Abläufe und Zustände zu gelangen. Ein zweiter Abschnitt beinhaltet eine Begriffsbestimmung von Simulation und Modellrechnung als virtuelle Versuche zur Nachbildung von Prozessen oder Zuständen mit der Zielsetzung der Modellierung und Erprobung komplexer Systeme. Beide Bereiche (Digital History und Simulation/Modellrechnung) werden in einem abschließenden dritten Abschnitt zusammengeführt, wobei ein spezifisches Augenmerk auf dem Quellenwert und den Grenzen von Simulationen und Modellrechnungen historischer Prozesse und Zustände gelegt wird
