The Harley Trilingual Psalter, a Witness to Multilingualism at the Court Scriptorium of Roger II of Sicily

From the book Medieval Multilingual Manuscripts

  • Cillian O’Hogan

Abstract

Manuscript London, British Library, Harley 5786, an early twelfthcentury Psalter from the circles around Roger II of Sicily, has parallel texts in Greek, Latin and Arabic. Detailed study of the arrangement of the manuscript, and the sequence of its composition, suggests close interaction between practitioners of the three languages in the scriptorium where it was made.
