Die seit ca. 1996 rasche Entwicklung des Internet bzw. des World Wide Web (WWW) hat die Praxis der Veröffentlichung, Verbreitung und Nutzung wissenschaftlicher Informationen grundlegend verändert. Um diese Informationen suchbar und retrievalfähig zu gestalten, ist in den letzten Jahren international viel diskutiert worden. Ein vielversprechender Ansatz, diesen neuen Herausforderungen zu begegnen, liegt in der Entwicklung von Metadatenprofilen. Da durch das Internet verschiedene Datenbestände, die von unterschiedlichen Bereichen wie Museen, Bibliotheken, Archiven etc. vorgehalten werden, unter einer Oberfläche durchsucht werden können, können Metadaten auch in diesem Bereich dazu beitragen, ein einheitliches Konzept zur Beschreibung und zum Retrieval von Online-Ressourcen zu entwickeln. Um die verteilt liegenden Dokumente unter einer Oberfläche für eine qualitativ hochwertige Recherche („Cross-Search“) anbieten zu können, ist die Verständigung auf ein Core-Set an Metadaten und daran anschließend verschiedene Mappingprozesse („Cross-walk“) von den lokalen Metadatenformaten zu dem Format des Core-Set an Metadaten notwendig. Ziel des Artikels ist es, die einzelnen Schritte, die für die Entwicklung eines Metadatenprofils für die gemeinsame Suche über verteilte Metadatensammlungen notwendig sind, aufzuzeigen.
Since about 1996 the Internet or WWW evolved in an extremely rapid way which strongly influenced and modified the publication, dispersion and the use of scientific information. During the last years there have been a lot of international discussions on how to make these informations searchable and retrievable. In this field the development of metadata profiles provides an auspicious approach to cope with these new challenges. In the World Wide Web various data, stored by museums, libraries, archives etc. could be searched across one platform. Also in this area metadata could contribute to develop a consistent concept for the description and retrieval of online resources. In order to be able to offer the distributed documents across one single platform for high-quality cross-searching, it is indispensable to agree upon a core-set of metadata as well as upon various mapping processes (cross-walks) from local metadata formats to the format of the common metadata core set. The aim of the article is to point out the particular steps which are necessary to develop a metadata profile for cross-searching heterogenous distributed metadata collections.
Depuis 1996 l'Internet s'évolue très rapidement ce qui a modifié fondamentalement la publication, la distribution et l'utilisation des informations scientifiques. Dans les dernières années on a discuté intensivement sur un niveau international comment il est possible de rechercher ces informations. Une possibilité de faire face à ce nouvel défi est la création des profils des métadonnées. Vu que différentes données, stockées dans les musées, les bibliothèques et les archives, peuvent être recherchées dans la toile partant d'une seule plateforme, les métadonnées peuvent contribuer à un développement d'un concept homogène pour la description et la recherche des ressources en ligne. Afin d'être capable de rechercher avec grande qualité des documents distribués partant d'une seule plateforme, il faut se mettre d'accord sur les éléments essentiels et sur les procès de mappage („Cross-walk“) qui convertissent des formats locaux des métadonnées en un format général. L'article montre les étapes qui mènent à la constitution d'un profil des métadonnées nécessaire pour rechercher dans les collections hétérogènes et distribuées des métadonnées.
