Preview: Some tradeshows to consider for industrial applications
Optics is a key enabling technology for a number of other industries. In particular, optical and laser technologies are currently conquering metal working. This was a reason for me to look a bit deeper into several professional trade shows in Germany in this autumn. Not all are in the focus of traditional optics people, but nevertheless, these are the events where the applications people go to.
Sheet metal processing: EuroBlech
According to the numbers, this bi-annual event draws quite a lot of attention: A total of 60 636 visitors from some 102 different countries came to Hanover in 2016 to get a glimpse of the latest trends in sheet metal processing. A total of 1505 companies from 41 countries lead me to believe that this is the biggest event in this field in the world.
This year, the major topic is digital transition in industry. But that is just one topic among 15 different technology sectors. The show will cover the entire sheet metal working technology chain. The show takes place in Hannover, Germany from October 23rd to 26th, 2018.
Just metal working: AMB
Even further away from laser technology but really important is another bi-annual event. About 90 000 people from 83 countries came to Stuttgart to see the 1469 exhibitors at AMB 2016. One could compare that (without any ranking) with FabTech in the USA. More than 35 000 attendees and over 1500 exhibiting companies are expected for the event in Atlanta, GA, in November.

They offer as a special show with a 2-day congress: ‘Digital Way’. It comes with ‘Solutions for digitization of business processes’ and ‘Digital business models’. If you want to be there you need to hurry up, it runs from September 18th to 22nd in Stuttgart, Germany.
All things additive: Formnext
This is the show where the field is about to explode: Additive manufacturing. The trade show started in 2015 and grew to 21 492 visitors and 470 exhibitors in 2017. The fact, that several more shows have entered the field for additive manufacturing in Germany, will not stop the growth of this event.
What’s hot and cooking? There will be an ‘AM Standards Forum’ giving a stage to experts from industry, research institutions, standards development organizations, professional societies and government to discuss developments in additive manufacturing (AM)/3D printing standardization. Formnext runs from November 13th to 16th in Frankfurt, Germany.

News from the European Optical Society EOS
EOS board elections 2018 concluded
In August 2018 the elections for the EOS Board were successfully concluded and four candidates were elected.
The Election Officers, Cornelia Denz and Hans Peter Herzig, expressed their congratulations to all the candidates on behalf of the President and Executive Committee of the EOS.
In the following we present short texts to introduce the new board members.
Mario Bertolotti
Mario Bertolotti was full professor of Physics and Optics at the University of Roma ‘La Sapienza’, Roma, Italy from 1970 to 2008. He is now retired. He is a specialist in lasers, quantum electronics, quantum optics, nonlinear optics, nano-optics and radiation damage in semiconductors.
Professor Bertolotti was a member of the board of EOS during the early years of the society and has been editor of the Journal of Pure and Applied Optics and of the society’s online journal JEOS:RP. He is a past president of the Italian Society of Optics and Photonics and currently represents the society on the Advisory Committee of EOS.
He also represents EOS at the Trieste ICTP. He is a member of the European Physical Society and is a fellow of EOS, SIF (the Italian Physical Society), OSA and IOP. He has written or co-written over 500 scientific papers, six books and several conference proceedings.
Professor Bertolotti believes that a strong EOS is essential for the future of European optics. If elected, he will work for an ever greater role of EOS in the development of optics in Europe through the national societies, and for making EOS an opportunity to its members.
Matthieu Roussey
Matthieu Roussey is 39 years old and received his PhD degree from the FEMTO-ST Institute (University of Franche-Comté, Besançon, France). He worked 4 years as project leader in the Optics & Photonics Technology group in EPFL (Neuchâtel, Switzerland). He is currently an Associate Professor in Experimental Photonics, leading the Integrated Optics Group at the University of Eastern Finland (Institute of Photonics, Joensuu, Finland).
His main research interests are in the fields of waveguide optics, nano-photonics and integrated optics. His group deals with advanced fabrication techniques for photonics and especially atomic layer deposition. In addition, he aims at applying his research work to sensing, biosensing and telecommunications.
Matthieu Roussey is an Associate Editor of the Journal of the European Optical Society – Rapid Publication.
Matthieu has strong expectations for future of optics and photonics in Europe and believes that the EOS is the key to expand the field. If elected, he will promote integrated photonics and optics in general, by organizing workshops and topical meetings, by converging interest of different fields of research, and by helping collaboration with other national and international societies.
Michael Pfeffer
Michael Pfeffer was born in 1966. He studied at the universities of Karlsruhe and Stuttgart (Germany), the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne (Switzerland) and the Kawasaki Medical School in Kurashiki (Japan). In 1993 he graduated at the University of Stuttgart and in 1998 received a PhD degree from EPFL.
In 2002, after several years working as a project leader in research and development in the Swiss optics industry, he was appointed Full Professor of Optics and Engineering at the Department of Physical Engineering of the Hochschule Ravensburg-Weingarten – University of Applied Science (Germany). Dr. Pfeffer teaches and researches in the field of optics, physical instrument design and nanotechnology and currently serves as Vice-Rector of the Hochschule Ravensburg-Weingarten – University of Applied Science.
Since 1998 Dr. Pfeffer has been a member of the German Society of Applied Optics (DGaO) and served from 2008 to 2012 as the President of the German Society of Applied Optics (DGaO). Within the EOS he was active in various bodies and positions such as the Scientific Advisory Board (2008–2012), Secretary of the Board (2012–2014) and in the Program Committee of EOSAM 2014 in Berlin. Furthermore, he his Editor-in-chief of Advanced Optical Technologies.
Gilles Pauliat
Gilles Pauliat received his PhD from Paris-Sud University. He leads a group at the Institut d’Optique, France, whose research focuses on nonlinear optics in micro-structured materials.
He has been continuously involved in the structuration and animation of our optics community. He has been a member of the French Optical Society since 1988, a member of EOS since its creation in 1991 and of OSA since 2005. He served as vice-president of the French Optical Society. He organized and co-organized meetings, and regularly takes part in scientific popularization by organizing and co-organizing exhibitions with up to tens of thousands of visitors.
His commitment for EOS has never failed since the early 1990s when he contributed to the animation of the EOS focus group ‘Optics in Computing’. He served as chairman in EOS topical meetings. He is an Associate Editor of the EOS journal. He promoted the creation of EOS student clubs in France. He is presently treasurer of EOS.
Now elected, he will be able to broaden these actions especially towards: a better visibility of optics and photonics at the European level; stronger relations between EOS and optical national learned societies; more efficient concertation and cooperation between academic and industrial EOS members.
