The project work undertaken by the Goethe-Institutes of the South American region focuses on social engagement, i. e. provides library and information competency to socially-disadvantaged groups within the field of “Culture and Development”. The aim is to work together with civil society and develop initiatives with young people, with the media and education. The project “education and information skills for the socially-disadvantaged” initiates and supports projects in the slums – the favelas – in terms of promoting literacy/education and information skills, as well as working with partner institutions that are library-oriented and working with the socially-disadvantaged. This article provides an overview of the activities of the Goethe-Institutes in Brazil and gives an insight into the situation of people, who, because of their background, have not been integrated into the modern, globalized knowledge and information-based society.
