Abstract

The article explores how the progressive social movements, which mobilized during the Trump era and expanded even more dramatically during 2020 (a year marked by a polarizing election and a pandemic), differ from their precursors and offer new opportunities. It first shows how, within the breadth and diversity of the Trump Resistance, demands for social and racial justice and the rejection of police violence emerged as themes allowing shared understandings. Next, it contextualizes the explosion of anti-poverty, anti-eviction, and anti-precarization movements within the changing US class structure increasingly characterized by accelerating inequality. These movements, as well as the wide-spread mobilizations around Black Lives Matter after the police murder of George Floyd in May 2020, are then interpreted within the frame of the US-specific development of racial capitalism and its (correspondingly limited) movement traditions. This interpretation allows us to identify the historically unique opportunities of these contemporary movements. Far right movements, which also expanded during the Trump era, similarly articulate contradictions of racial capitalism and its associated limited democracy, as is shown in the discussion of the storming of the Capitol.
