Abstract

It is a widely held view that Martin Luther created the modern German language by translating the Bible. The importance of the “Reichspublizistik”, i. e. the publication of imperial and district farewells, imperial decrees, protocols of the Imperial Diet curia etc. as well as those works that deal scientifically with imperial constitutional law, has not yet been adequately appreciated for the development of standard German language. This article is going to scrutinize this corpus of sources and will clarify how “Teutschland” turned into “Deutschland”.
