Abstract
Blanckenburg’s Versuch über den Roman as well as Goethe’s Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre develop a theory of the novel based on the connection between “Ausbildung”, the institution of theatre, and “character”. While Blanckenburg outlines an analogy of poiesis and social formation in the metaphor “kleine Züge”, Goethe’s novel alludes to these concepts not only by refusing its protagonist the Bildung he is striving for but also by a deformation of the novel.
