Winners of the 2015 IUPAC-SOLVAY International Award for Young Chemists

It is essential for sustainable development of Chemistry that we recognize top quality early career research workers. IUPAC has been doing this for the last 16 years through annual awards to the most outstanding PhD theses in the area of the chemical sciences. Solvay joined this initiative 2 years ago, and we are delighted to present the winners of the 2015 IUPAC–Solvay International Award for Young Chemists. The award is based on 1000-word essays on the candidate’s research, and is judged by a Prize Selection Committee comprised of members of the IUPAC Bureau with a wide range of expertise in chemistry. The committee was chaired by Professor Kazuyuki Tatsumi, IUPAC Past President. There were 48 applicants from 16 countries, all of a very high standard. These covered a broad spectrum of the chemical sciences. After full consideration of the originality and excellence of the research presented the Selection committee decided unanimously to award the 2015 IUPAC-SOLVAY International Award for young Chemists to the following five essays:

“Expanding the role of viologens in supramolecular chemistry through radical-based integrated materials and as hosts for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons”, Jonathan Barnes, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, USA.

“Understanding and manipulating the reactivity of nitroxides and other stable free radicals”, Ganna Gryn’ova, Australian National University, Canberra, Australia.

“Pathway complexity in π-conjugated materials”, Peter Korevaar, Eindhoven University of Technology, Eindhoven, The Netherlands.

“Structural insights from the NMR spectroscopv of quadrupolar nuclei: exploiting electric field gradient and spin–spin coupling tensors”, Frédéric Perras, University of Ottawa, Ottawa, Canada.

“High performance fiber-shaped solar cells”, Zhibin Yang, Fudan University, Shanghai, China.

Further information on the award has been presented in Chemistry International (July–August 2015 pages 15–16), and the essays describing the work may be found on the IUPAC web site.

The winners were asked to present their award winning work at the 45th IUPAC World Chemistry Congress, 9–14 August 2015, in Busan, Korea. In addition, they have been invited to submit a short critical review of this research for publication in Pure and Applied Chemistry, following peer review. We published in the last issue of the journal the 2015 prize winning papers from Frédéric A. Perras and Zhibin Yang. In addition we included a paper from a winner of the 2014 IUPAC-SOLVAY International Award for Young Chemists, Keary M. Engle.
