Abstract
Ortsnamen können im Kontext gegenwärtiger Debatten, insbesondere zum sog. spatial turn und zur Religionsästhetik, wesentliche Beiträge leisten, sind im religionswissenschaftlichen Fachdiskurs bislang jedoch kaum gewürdigt worden. Der Aufsatz gibt in Form eines Hypothesenkatalogs einen Überblick über zentrale Aspekte des Potentials, das diese Quellengattung hier haben kann: In diachroner Perspektive können Toponyme u. a. als Quellen für historische religiöse Raumordnungen dienen. In synchroner Perspektive spielen sie u. a. als Speicherungsmedium des kulturellen Gedächtnisses eine Rolle bei der Schaffung von Assoziationsräumen und der Vergegenwärtigung und Naturalisierung von religiösen Ordnungen. Sie leisten einen Beitrag zur Schaffung eines Gefühls von Heimat, zu Orientierungsstiftung und zu Kontingenzbewältigung. Zugleich können sie zu Katalysatoren einer Neuerfindung von Traditionen werden, dokumentieren religiöse Pluralismen und stellen Kristallisationspunkte von Konflikten dar.
Abstract
In current debates, especially in the contexts of the spatial turn and the aesthetics of religions, place names can make a substantial contribution to research in Comparative Religion. Nevertheless, so far they have hardly been drawn on in this discourse. The paper proposes a series of hypotheses which aim to summarise central aspects of the potential that toponyms can have as sources for the study of religions: In diachronic perspective, toponyms can shed light on the historical spatiality of religions. In synchronic perspective, they can function as mnemonic pegs which create spaces and places filled with meaning through specific associations; they contribute to giving religions a presence in geographical space and to naturalise them; they aid in the creation of a feeling of being at home and play a role in the provision of orientation as well as in strategies of coping with contingency. At the same time, they can act as catalysts of invention for new traditions, document religious pluralisms, and become focal points of conflicts.
