The reaction of cyclohexylamine, sulfur, and hydrogen sulfide in a 2:1-mixture of ethanol and water gives a red cyclohexylammonium polysulfide solution. Orange crystals of the title compound can be obtained by slow cooling. The compound crystallizes in the centrosymmetric triclinic space group P1̄. The lattice constants are a = 8.478(7) Å , b = 11.97(1) Å , c = 14.141(8) Å, α = 102.60(6)°, β = 90.53(5)°, γ = 90.43(7)°. The S72--chain has an uncommon cis-trans-cis conformation with a sequence of the signs of torsion angles of (+--+) and (-++-).
