Abstract

Abstract

Currently, CVD diamond coatings are being used in the machining of challenging materials, because they lead to a significant increase in tool life. In particular, nano-crystalline diamond coatings enable low roughness while simultaneously achieving the highest hardnesses. In the present study, these coatings were applied to carbide cutting punches for punching spring-hard strips for the first time and their influence on wear was investigated Experiments with up to 100,000 strokes have shown very good results for coatings with a thickness in the range of 8 μm. Consequently, such nano-diamond coatings have great potential for reducing the wear of carbide punches in stamping processes.
