Abstract

There exists a large scatter of Young's moduli handbook values. The most important reason for this is the diversity of measurement methods used in various laboratories. The average E-value of these measurements is not the best one. A more accurate value may be obtained by verification of handbook data for four elastic coefficients E, G, B and PR, using two known relations for isotropic materials. In some cases discussed by the author, a correlation exists between the E-moduli and the latent fusion heat magnitude sequences for a certain group of metals, which may be used for verification of some E-values. The E-values obtained in a previous MP-paper by the author published in Materials Testing 11–12/2004, using the relative method of calculation based on a correct E-value for pure aluminum, seem to be superior to those obtained directly by the formula E = V2d.

Kurzfassung

Die Werte der Elastizitätsmodule weisen für reine Metalle in verschiedenen Handbüchern große Streuungen auf. Die wichtigste Ursache dieser Streuungen sind überwiegend die verschiedenen Messverfahren, die in den verschiedenen Laboratorien angewandt wurden. Genauere Werte von E, G, B und PR gegenüber den Abgaben in den Handbüchern ergeben sich mittels rechnerischer Verifizierung über zwei bekannte Verhältnisse der verschiedenen Module für isotrpe Werkstoffe. Wie vom Autor mehrfach gezeigt, können darüber hinaus in vielen Fällen die Werte des Elastizitätsmoduls E mit denen der Schmelz-Wärme korreliert werden. Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird dargestellt, dass die in der vorherigen Veröffentlichung (Materialprüfung 11–12/2004) präsentierten und mit dem relativen Laplace-Verfahren bestimmten E-Modul-Werte genauer als die mittels der Formel E = V2d berechneten Werte sind.


Prof. Dr. Alfred Buch studied Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science in Warsaw, Lvov and St. Petersburg. He received the degrees M. Sc. in 1943 and Dr. Sc. Tech. in 1949. From 1956 to 1968, he was head of the Materials Strength Department of an industrial research institute in Warsaw. From 1969 until his retirement, he worked in the Aeronautical Department of the Technical University Technion in Haifa, Israel. He is the author of many publications in the field of fatigue and materials science. Among his cooperations with German researchers, he has frequently worked together with the Institut für Werkstofftechnik and the Laboratorium für Betriebsfestigkeit in Darmstadt.
