Abstract

This contribution describes the principles of measurement and testing, and a combined measurement testing methodology to characterize material properties.

Die Arbeit beschreibt die Methoden des Messens und des Prüfens sowie eine kombinierte mess-prüftechnische Methodik zur Charakterisierung von Materialeigenschaften.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h. c. Horst Czichos graduated in Precision Engineering and worked as a design engineer in the optical industry. He holds degrees in Physics (Dipl.-Phys.) and in Materials Science (Dr.- Ing.) from Free University and Technical University of Berlin, Germany. The University KU Leuven, Belgium, awarded him an honorary doctorate for his comprehensive research in tribology and technology studies as basis for European research programs. He was President of BAM, the German Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, Berlin, Germany from 1992 to 2002, and President of EUROLAB, the European Federation of National Associations of Measurement, Testing and Analytical Laboratories from 1999 to 2003. Currently, he is Professor for Mechatronics at University of Applied Sciences, BHT, Berlin, and in 2006, he received the Christian Peter Beuth Prize for outstanding performance in engineering education. He authored and edited several books, including the Springer Handbook of Metrology and Testing (Springer 2011), the Handbook of Technical Diagnostics (Springer 2013) and the textbook Mechatronik (Springer Vieweg 2015).
