3D Microstructural Study of AlSi8Mg5 Alloy by FIB-Tomography

Abstract

In the present work, a foundry AlSi8Mg5 alloy is investigated by FIB-Tomography in the as-cast condition and after semi-solid heat treatment. The different microstrutural features are characterized quantitatively using morphological shape factors. The 3D-shape of Mg2Si Chinese script as well as Si and impurity Fe containing phases are revealed in high detail. A comparative study with respect to 2D structures is presented as well.

Kurzfassung

In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird eine AlSi8Mg5-Gießereilegierung mit der FIB-Tomographie in gegossenem Zustand und nach einer Halbfest-Wärmebehandlung untersucht. Die verschiedenen Merkmale der Mikrostruktur werden unter Anwendung morphologischer Formfaktoren charakterisiert. Die 3D-Form von Mg2Si (Chinesenschrift) sowie die Si und verunreinigendes Fe enthaltenden Phasen werden sehr ausführlich offenbart. Ebenso wird eine Vergleichsuntersuchung in Bezug auf 2D-Strukturen vorgestellt.

Fernando A. Lasagni Fernando A. Lasagni holds a PhD in Materials Science (TU-Vienna, 2006) in the field of Al-alloys and MMCs. He was awarded with the Fritz-Grasenick Prize 2007 by the Austrian Society of Electron Microscopy for his research in FIB Tomography. After occupying a research position at IberEspacio S.A. (2008), he joined FADA-CATEC where he is currently the head of the Materials and Processes department.

Andrés Lasagni Andres F. Lasagni earned his doctorate in Materials Science at University of Saarland. He has been awarded with the Fritz-Grasenick 2007 and the Werner Köster Prize 2006 for his work related with FIB-Tomography and Laser processing, respectively. After a Postdoctoral stage at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship), he joined the Franhofer IWS where he is currently the head of the Surface Functionalization Group.
