Fracture of a Compressor Stator Blade in a Gas Turbine Engine

Abstract

On the occasion of the revision of a gas turbine power plant in Northern Germany, a surface crack was detected in one of the 44 stage 0 compressor stator blades during a routine non-destructive testing of the blades. By then the engine had completed more than 38,000 h of operation. The damaged blade was precision drop-forged and copy-milled of X20Cr13 and for some time was wearing a subsequently applied corrosion protection coating containing aluminium pigments. The blade's condition before the subsequent coating was applied is unknown.

The metallurgical investigation found that the cause of failure was corrosion fatigue.

Kurzfassung

Anlässlich der Revision eines Gasturbinenkraftwerks in Norddeutschland wurde bei der routinemäßigen zerstörungsfreien Prüfung der Beschaufelung bei einer von 44 Verdichterleitschaufeln der Stufe 0 ein Anriss im Blatt festgestellt. Die Maschine hatte bis dahin mehr als 38000 Betriebsstunden absolviert. Die Schadensschaufel war aus X20Cr13 präzisionsgesenkgeschmiedet und kopiergefräst und trug seit einiger Zeit eine nachträglich aufgebrachte Aluminiumpigment-Korrosionsschutzschicht. Der Zustand dieser Schaufeln vor der nachträglichen Beschichtung ist unbekannt.

Die werkstofftechnische Untersuchung ergab als Schadensursache Schwingungsrisskorrosion (SchwRK).

Biljana Matijasevic-Lux studied metallurgy at Technical University of Belgrade. She did her diploma thesis at Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin. She received her doctorate from the TU Berlin in 2006 and joined Siemens' Energy Sector in the same year.

Andreas Neidel was born in 1961 and studied mechanical engineering at IH Berlin. He got his doctorate there in 1991 with a thesis on high speed heat treatment of low alloy steel. In 1992 he joined Siemens' Energy Sector. Having worked ever since in quality management functions, he has been manager of the laboratories at the Berlin Gas Turbine Manufacturing Plant.
