Abstract
The central part of the Mg–Al phase diagram was experimentally re-investigated. Between the γ and β phases only one additional intermediate phase could be verified. The other phases reported in literature may be explained by a commensurate modulation of the γ phase (γ') found recently by electron diffraction. The solubility limit of γ' near the melting temperature was investigated by wavelength dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Thermodynamic descriptions for these phases are proposed.
