Following the Habsburg takeover of Bukovina, an influx of migrants from German-speaking countries was encouraged. Various factors ultimately turned these migrants into “Bukovina Germans” or “Buchenland Germans” – including the activities of ethno-political entrepreneurs, the pressure of “Romanianization” in the inter-war years, the völkisch movement, and the consequences of resettlement in 1940–41.
