Abstract
Cognitive automobiles acquire an internal representation of the driving environment through perception and interpretation of video- and lidar-data. This knowledge serves as a basis for decision and control of driving behavior that is appropriate in the perceived driving situation. Probabilistic models enable a consistent representation of the acquired sensor information and its uncertainty. In this context, symbolic knowledge on the traffic situation may be formulated probabilistically and inferred using Markov Logic Networks. Beyond skill- and rule-based behavior the concept of knowledge-based methods allow to specify values and goals. The task of behavior decision then reduces to the selection of the behavior alternative that fulfils the preset goals to the highest expected degree. Preliminary results include an experimental vehicle that conducts first autonomous maneuvers and that has entered the finals of the Urban Challenge competition.
