Abstract

World of Warcraft has been market leader in the genre of Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG) for several years running, with approximately 11.5 million users around the world. This study aims to contribute an explanation for this remarkable success. To thiss end, it develops a model featuring fi ve determinants of relative advantage on the basis of the results of research into the entertainment experience in the context of computer games. This model was checked based on a sample of (N = 121) active users. The results show that the relative advantage of World of Warcraft stems from the quality of its story content. Other aspects, such as technical quality, play only a subordinate role in contributing to the relative advantage. This survey also recommends further research into the causative relations of narrative elements in virtual worlds.
