Beams of Li+ ions with velocities between 4 · 108 cm s–1 and 8 · 108 cm s–1 were brought into charge equilibrium in the gases H2 and air. The fractional amounts of Lio, Li+, Li++ and Li+++ are measured. The neutral particles were detected in a simple way. Extrapolation of our results gives good agreement with data of Allison1 for ion velocities v ≦ 3,5 · 108 cms–1. The equilibrium charge q̅ in hydrogen was found to be smaller than that in air at velocities up to 6 · 108 cm s–1 but larger at higher velocities. For the ratios of the equilibrated beam components with charge 3 and 2 (F300/F200) in H2 and air relations are given which enable an extrapolation of our data for q to higher energies.
