Colourless needles of the compound CsGaS2 were obtained by the reaction of cesium carbonate with gallium oxide at 850°C under a stream of H2S. Structural investigations of (100) twinned crystals revealed an atomic arrangement isotypical with RbFeS2. Space group C2/c; a = 7.425(6) Å, b = 12.21(1) Å, c = 5.907(6) Å, β = 113.1(1)°; z = 4. The structural similarities between alkalithiogallates and -ferrates can be utilized in studying the magnetic interactions between the iron atoms within the sequence of mixed crystals of AFe1-xGaxS2 (A ≙ alkali metal).
