Abstract
A nice blue colour arises from acetaldehyde, Na2[Fe(CN)5NO] • 2 H2O and piperidine (Simon-Awe Reaction). Structure elucidation of the blue material (leading to 1) by combustion analysis, ligand exchange to [Fe(CN)6]4-, reduction to β-aminoethanol and hydrolysis to glyoxal are described. - The blue complex does not contain the amine moiety but is formed via an enamine, an colourless immoniumsalt 2 and its hydrolysis to 1. - Loach's experiments are re-evaluated
