Abstract
The common A-dihydrobiliverdin chromophor proposed to be present in both phycocyanin and phytochrome Pr has been characterized by using octaethylbiliverdin and its A-dihydro derivative as model compounds. The UV-vis spectra for the free bases, cations, anions and zinc complexes are reported, and the related protonation-deprotonation equilibria have been studied. The data support the postulated structures for the biliproteid chromophor, and at the same time they indicate A-dihydrooctaethylbiliverdin to be a useful model.
