The reestablishment of political theory and sociology within the social sciences now taking place in the German Democratic Republic, as elsewhere in the socialist world, is manifested in efforts within the political and legal sciences in the GDR to establish sociology of law as an independent discipline, not only providing empirical foundations for law but also making a theoretical contribution of its own. In addition to a description of the current situation, this article offers some thoughts on the research potential in sociology of law, discussing, among other points, its relocation in the law faculty of the Humboldt-University Berlin, its resources, and the development of personnel. The article was prepared in August 1989, i.e., before the political changes that have since taken place, as an internal discussion paper, not for publication. Except for stylistic changes, it has not been altered.
