The situation of women in the four classical legal professions in Germany (judges, prosecutors, practising lawyers and notaries) is being analysed on the basis of audio-recorded interviews conducted with men and women lawyers from East and West Germany during the period between September 1990 and April 1994. In purely quantitative terms the proportion of women in all four branches of the profession is found to be well above that in the old FRG. However, there are indications of a clear differentiation with regard to areas of work, clients and income levels. Such gender-based differentiations overlap to a considerable extent with a division according to social origin (East/West).
