Abstract

Abstract

I am grateful for this opportunity to wish members of IUPAC bodies, fellows, affiliate members, and our company associates a fruitful and healthy year in 2016. I am also grateful to the IUPAC family for its commitment to the chemical sciences. As I have mentioned in my Vice President Critical Assessment in Busan, chemistry is the music of nature, which, while playing with a limited number of elements, creates the infinite beauty of the Universe. To help society appreciate chemistry is one of the key goals of IUPAC. The momentum gained during the International Year of Chemistry (http://iyc2011.iupac.org/) should be used by IUPAC to communicate to society and help it to hear the music of chemistry in everyday life. The potential of young chemists could be effectively used for this purpose, in combination with the life experience of the elder generations of chemists.

Abstract

A task group chaired by Mark Cesa has completed a review of IUPAC strategy, with a focus on defining IUPAC’s unique role in the chemical enterprise and enabling it to contribute effectively in the coming years. Survey input from a broad range of IUPAC volunteers, members, and stakeholders, as well as scientists outside the Union, informed the development of a new vision and mission statement, and new core values, goals, and objectives. Constructive comments and support from members of the Bureau and the NAOs have helped refine the elements of this new strategy, which was presented in August 2015 to the Council and to our volunteers in the Divisions and Standing Committees as they direct their efforts toward achieving these goals.

Abstract

One of the founding principles of IUPAC is that our work—our standards, our nomenclature and the output of all our projects—is available to all. We therefore have limited scope to earn income from our intellectual property. In common with many other scientific organisations, we have also seen a fall in earnings from our publications. This means that we are increasingly dependent on subscriptions from our National Adhering Organisations (NAOs) to fund our activities sustainably.

Abstract

There are many reasons chemistry education varies among nations and institutions: cultural traditions, societal expectations, socio-economic factors, and educational resources, to name just a few. At the university level there is also a dependence on the earlier educational system, as well as the research profile of the particular institution. In an increasingly globalized world, however, graduate mobility across international boundaries is more relevant than ever. In order to promote high quality chemistry education, comparisons and communication at both national and international levels are important for designing or improving programs. Such comparisons can raise the awareness of what to change and what to hold on to.

Abstract

Studies of ocean chemistry on a global scale have a long history, beginning with the Challenger Expedition in the 19th Century. In the modern era, the Geochemical Ocean Section Study (GEOSECS) programme in the 1970s provided the first global picture of inorganic carbon and its isotopes in the ocean and laid the basis for the first assessments of the extent to which the oceans take up fossil fuel CO 2 from the atmosphere. This foundation was later complemented by the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) which, although focused primarily on physical oceanography, provided a wealth of information on nutrient and inorganic carbon distributions.

Abstract

Last September, on the first day of the World Social Science Forum 2015 in Durban, South Africa, the International Council for Science (ICSU), the International Social Science Council (ISSC), and the International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences (CIPSH) jointly announced that 2016 would be the International Year of Global Understanding (IYGU). The aim of IYGU is to promote better understanding of how the local impacts the global in order to foster smart policies to tackle critical global challenges, such as climate change, food security, and migration.

Green Chemistry for Life Grant Programme—Call for Applications

Abstract

The PhosAgro/UNESCO/IUPAC grant programme aims to promote the implementation of innovative research projects in green chemistry that respect the 12 principles of green chemistry. Young scientists aged 35 years or less with a PhD degree (or equivalent) in chemistry or its allied areas are invited to compete. Successful projects will be selected by an international scientific jury. Grants will be up to US$30,000 and should be awarded for research that may be completed in one year.

Abstract

IUPAC and Gedeon Richter, Plc. are pleased to announce the 2016 IUPAC-Richter Prize in Medicinal Chemistry. The Prize was established in 2006 by a generous gift from the Chemical Works of Gedeon Richter, Plc. (Budapest, Hungary) to acknowledge the key role that medicinal chemistry plays in improving human health. The prize—USD 10000—is awarded to an internationally recognized scientist, preferably a medicinal chemist, whose activities or published accounts have made an outstanding contribution to the practice of medicinal chemistry, or to an outstanding example of new drug discovery. Previous IUPAC-Richter Prizes were awarded to Malcolm F.G. Stevens in 2006, Jan Heeres in 2008, Arun K. Ghosh in 2010, Stephen Hanessian in 2012, and Helmut Buschmann in 2014.

Abstract

As a way of promoting a culture of responsible conduct in the chemical sciences and to guard against the misuse of chemistry, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPWC) facilitated a project, begun in November 2014, to develop ethical guidelines for chemistry practitioners related to the Chemical Weapons Convention. Two workshops involving a group of more than 30 scientists and chemistry professionals from over 20 countries were organized to discuss and draft possible ethical guidelines for the practice of chemistry under the norms of the Convention. The workshops were held on 10-11 March and 17-18 September 2015 at OPCW Headquarters in The Hague and were chaired by Professor Alejandra Suárez of Argentina.

Abstract

The International Year of Crystallography 2014 (IYCr2014) Legacy conference, held in Rabat, Morocco in April 2015 under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohamed VI, reviewed the accomplishments achieved during IYCr2014, with a forward-looking focus sustaining momentum and building on past success. The President of the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr), the Director of the Science Policy and Capacity Building Division of UNESCO, the President of the World Academy of Science, and the Director of the International Council for Science–—Regional Office for Africa signed a letter of commitment and invited IUPAC to endorse the actions and goals set out in the IYCr2014 Legacy Resolution.

Abstract

MinSik Cho (18 years old) of the CheongShim International Academy in Korea is awarded first prize in the 2015 IUPAC Physical and Biophysical Chemistry Division student cartoon competition for his cartoon describing the origins of color in molecules. The theme of the competition, held during the 2015 International Year of Light, was Light and Chemistry. MinSik’s cartoon was selected both for the excellence of the artwork and the quality of the scientific message conveyed. The members of the Division would like to wish him well in his further studies and thank him and the other entrants for participating in the competition.

In Memoriam: Camille Georges Wermuth

Abstract

Professor Wermuth passed away in September 2015. To the members of IUPAC who have had the chance and good fortune to have met him, Camille will be remembered as a distinguished gentleman. Camille made many outstanding contributions to medicinal chemistry, both in research and in supporting the subject, not least in IUPAC. He helped to establish the Medicinal Chemistry Section in 1987 and became Section President. He was President of the Chemistry and Human Division in 1998-99. He was a strong proponent for enlarging the scope of activities and promoted new initiatives through the project system. During his tenure with IUPAC, he invited and nurtured the participation of many new members. It is with gratitude and admiration that many have expressed their sadness, owing much for his leadership during those early times.

About this journal

Chemistry International (CI) is the newsmagazine of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). News about IUPAC, its chemists, publications, recommendations, conferences and the work of its Divisions and Committees along with special feature articles is published quarterly in CI.

From 2022 onwards, CI is an online only publication and is freely accessible to all readers. The print edition has been discontinued.

In recognition of IUPAC’s Centenary in 2019, a new initiative, the Top 10 Emerging Technologies in Chemistry, was launched. The purpose of the initiative is to showcase the value of Chemistry and chemists and to inform the general public on how the chemical sciences contribute to the well-being of society and the sustainability of planet Earth.
