Abstract

After sixty years, the work on the Hamburg Klopstock edition is nearing completion. That is reason enough to recall the planned and unplanned, the institutional, material, financial and personal conditions under which this complete edition has become what currently distinguishes it from comparable German-language editions of poets. The conceptual and methodical characteristics are described that allow the Hamburg Klopstock edition to be classified in terms of the history of scholarly editing: the strong author-centrism in the volumes of the Works section of the edition; the explanations as a focus in the reader-friendly volumes of the correspondence as well as the methodical innovations in the Addenda section in the form of the genetic prose text representation (Addenda II) and the bibliographical description of the prints of Klopstock’s works based on the model of the Anglo-American analytical bibliography (Addenda III). The typographic design is another characteristic of this edition.

Abstract

After a look at the history of typewriter development and in particular at its significance for the poet’s mode of production, two fundamentally different ‘writing settings’ are distinguished with regard to the interplay of the triad ‘producer – instrument – product’, which depend on the question about whether the poet himself operates the typewriter. For both writing settings, various examples are given, and positions of writers are examined in more detail. Based on the particular challenges of typescript analysis, a systematic catalogue is developed that explains the different categories as well as their respective specific potential for insight. On the basis of three selected examples from the digital historical-critical edition of Arthur Schnitzler’s late works, these research methods are finally applied in concreto to illustrate their added value for the reconstruction of text genesis in typescripts.

Abstract

Digital editions should be permanently accessible to all – but what about people with disabilities? This question is explored in this article. It is not only about the publication of data on the user interface, but also about data generation as well as the findability and reusability of data from editions with regard to improved access. While there are already concrete recommendations for designing the user interface to be more accessible, there is still a lack of specifications for the subsequent use of data beyond the user interface.

Abstract

Citizen science, understood as research that includes both specialists and interested laypeople in its work, has, in recent years, become a key concept in debates about the future of scholarly practice. The essay attempts to transfer this approach to the requirements and processes of scholarly editing, especially under the heading of professionalism. It not only analyses the strategies of projects that have succeeded in editing larger amounts of text using crowdsourcing methods, but also explores where the involvement of volunteers or the outsourcing of editorial activities reaches its limit.

Abstract

For young people school is the very first place where a fruitful and enlightening encounter with literature may take place, provided that the teaching can rely on well edited texts. Against this background of experience, the essayistically sharpened paper reports the results of an examination of eighteen Austrian textbooks at secondary level II, in which original-language text examples from the German literary history of the Middle Ages are reproduced. The results of the survey depict, on the one hand, a revealing canon of near-source printed literary works and on the other hand it illustrates that in most cases the editorial templates used in textbooks are far away from the quality standards and informative value of modern reference editions. As the study generally concludes, it would be up to the editing community to urgently establish a new, mutually beneficial cooperation with all the institutions and publishers involved in the production of school textbooks in order to supply the classrooms with more suitable specialist editions and customised materials as soon as possible.

Abstract

The two parts of the article are complementary. In the first part, Justin Vollmann takes a look at digital editing and in particular at the online edition Lyrik des Deutschen Mittelalters ( LDM ) from a McLuhanian perspective, with LDM also being presented in its basic functions. In the second part, Florian Kragl follows the ‘gutenberggalactic’ tendencies of medieval manuscript tradition using Bligger von Steinach as an example, and then asks about the editorial consequences. The common goal is to establish a differentiated view on the medieval manuscript culture and its modern edition possibilities.

Abstract

Textual variance poses a particular challenge to editing medieval texts. Digital editions in particular can respond to these challenges in order to convey to the user the potential of variance and to enable an interpretation of medieval literary works that is close to their actual transmission. This paper presents some possibilities of dealing with and presenting variance through the example of the digital edition of a late-medieval legendary, the so-called Der Heiligen Leben, Redaktion . This collection of saints’ legends offers a particularly good example of the value of considering textual variants, while also posing particular challenges for communicating variance.

Abstract

What path did the textual history of Schleiermacher’s Charades take between the first handwritten transcription around 1806 and the oldest printings in the 1820s and 1830s – which lack a clear authorisation and differ greatly in textual form? In this unclear situation, Schleiermacher philology has also discussed a copy by an unknown hand as a textual witness (of dubious value), which can now be clearly assigned and dated on the basis of the accompanying letter and a comparison of manuscripts. It documents the circulation of the sociable occasional poems in the Hallenser Kreis (Halle Circle) in 1806/07 and at the same time forms the source for the second verifiable print in 1837.
