On March 23, 2021 (21:14 universal time coordinated), an Mw 5.3 earthquake occurred in Baicheng County in Xinjiang, northwestern China, according to the United States Geological Survey. The earthquake produced a 4-km-long surface rupture at the epicenter, which is generally rare for earthquakes of magnitude 5.3. Thus, investigating the Baicheng earthquake is crucial for understanding the seismogenic structure of the region. We obtained the interferometric synthetic aperture radar deformation field and inverted the slip distribution of the Baicheng earthquake using Sentinel-1A satellite data and surface rupture data. The results indicate that the surface deformation area was elliptical, with long and short axes of approximately 20 and 10 km, respectively. The seismogenic structure is a left-lateral strike-slip fault with a small dip-slip component and strike and dip angles of 248° and 70°, respectively. Two other slip centers were also observed at 2 and 8 km beneath the surface in the dip direction. The maximum slip at 2 km was 0.45 m. Shear deformation between the Tarim Basin and Southern Tianshan Mountains was responsible for the strike-slip features of the Baicheng earthquake.

Remotely piloted aircrafts (RPAs) are becoming well-known for monitoring forest restoration (FR). Canopy cover percentage on a restoration site is a major indicator for the early phases of FR. We present a protocol to evaluate canopy cover using low-cost RPA and a friendly computational environment. We tested the protocol in six FR projects in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. After processing the images automatically to generate the digital surface model and the digital terrain model, the canopy cover is measured in QGIS by considering height thresholds in the canopy height model. The results had F 1 values higher than 0.9, which confirms a robust methodology that does not require specific computer science or remote sensing skills. Thus, low-cost RPA proved to be accurate and user-friendly in measuring the canopy cover, which improves monitoring during most FR stages. Such finding plays an important role in FR policies and future works must study a user-friendly protocol for measuring tree height via low-cost drones.

Landscape tree species recognition using RedEdge-MX: Suitability analysis of two different texture extraction forms under MLC and RF supervision

Abstract

The size of the texture extraction window impacts image tree species classification, and the determination of the optimal texture extraction window requires the supervision of a specific classifier for accuracy. Therefore, it is necessary to analyse which kind of classifier is more suitable and should be to choose. In this study, we extracted eight types of textures, namely mean, variance, homogeneity, contrast, dissimilarity, entropy, second moment and correlation, changed the window size by gradient increase and used maximum likelihood classification (MLC) and random forest (RF) to supervise and determine their optimal extraction windows, respectively. Finally, the optimised time consumption and classification accuracy for tree species classification was identified. The time consumption of MLC was significantly less than that of RF; however, neither was very long; for most textures, the optimal texture extraction window determined by MLC supervision was larger than that determined by RF supervision; in the classification of most feature sets, the overall accuracy obtained by MLC was less than that of RF. Because the time consumption of the texture extraction was much greater than that of the image classification, the comprehensive trade-off indicates that using RF supervision to determine the optimal window for texture extraction was more conducive to tree species recognition.

Serbian spas, with their abundant geothermal springs and air qualities, are a significant natural resource for the country. Nowadays, tourism industry has become a predominant beneficiary attracting both leisure- and health-related visits. Nonetheless, the literature on current consumer behavior is devoid of a model that incorporates both motivating and constraining factors in the spa and wellness industry’s decision-making process. Serbia’s spa industry is still adjusting to the needs of the modern wellness visitor as a result of the country’s unique transitional path. The purpose of this study is to ascertain the role of incentive and restrictions in the destination selection process of spa visitors in Serbia, to gain insight into the development of wellness tourism in a particular sociocultural environment. The analytical hierarchy process was used to determine the relative relevance of the consumer behavior elements evaluated. The findings indicate that non-medical motivations are becoming more important, implying that demand is finally shifting toward the wellness idea, which was initially disrupted by the country’s delayed transformation. The findings have administrative ramifications, the most significant of which were price strategies and product diversification.
