Abstract

The German power grid is facing the disruptive challenge to integrate massively decentral infeed of renewable electric power. It is commonly agreed that information technology can help in managing this problem, mainly by tailoring communication protocols and interfaces, as well as data warehousing and information retrieval approaches to this problem domain. This paper advocates a radically different approach. We draw strong analogies between the operation of the Internet and the operation of a future power grid, and from that derive principles that inspire the design of a new generation of distributed and decentralised power grid control appliances. We report on some prototypical controller designs for photovoltaic generators, and contrast their reliable operation with critical shortcomings of controllers installed on hundreds of thousands of German rooftops to date. Zusammenfassung Die enorme Zunahme der Einspeisung von dezentral erzeugter erneuerbarer Energie ist eine fundamentale Herausforderung für das deutsche Elektrizitätsnetz. Allgemeiner Konsens ist, dass Informationstechnologie ein Schlüssel zur Bewältigung dieses Problems sein kann, wobei hier vor allem auf die Entwicklung von Kommunikationsprotokollen und -schnittstellen, aber auch von Data Warehousing und Information Retrieval-Technologien gesetzt wird. In diesem Papier plädieren wir für einen völlig anderen Ansatz: Wir zeigen deutliche Analogien zwischen dem Funktionieren des Internets und dem Betrieb des zukünftigen Elektrizitätsnetzes auf, und leiten daraus Prinzipien für die Entwicklung einer neuen Generation von verteilten, dezentralen Reglern für Elektrizitätsnetze ab. Auf Grundlage dieser Prinzipien entwerfen wir neuartige Regelungsalgorithmen für Photovoltaikanlagen, die einige kritische Nachteile der gegenwärtig auf hunderttausenden deutschen Dächern installierten Regler beseitigen.

Abstract

The transformation to the guide system of renewable energy requires the flexibilization of the energy system where smart grids are the basis for new grid and market functions with close inclusion of customers’ properties. The E-Energy project moma developed a new procedure for a cellular grid operation with automated processes. In this article, the moma system is put in relation to the architecture of the EU-smart grid mandate 490 as well as to moma flexibilization functions. Zusammenfassung Die Transformation zum Leitsystem Erneuerbare Energien erfordert die Flexibilisierung des Energiesystems, wobei Smart Grids die Grundlage für neue Netz- und Marktfunktionen bei enger Einbindung der Liegenschaften der Endkunden bilden. Das E-Energy-Projekt moma entwickelte dafür ein neues Verfahren zur zellularen Netzführung mit automatisierten Prozessen. Im Artikel wird dabei das moma-System auf die Architektur im EU-Smart Grid Mandat 490 sowie zu moma-Flexibilisierungsfunktionen in Beziehung gesetzt.

Legal Aspects of Demand Side Management in Germany / Rechtliche Aspekte des Demand Side Management in Deutschland

Abstract

Information and communication technologies (ICT) will play a key role in electricity distribution grids, especially with regard to grid monitoring and system services conducted through measures of demand side management (DSM). This paper outlines legal aspects to be taken into consideration when designing an ICT infrastructure to establish a market for demand side management and aims at pointing out the need for further legal research and for adaption of the existing legal and regulatory framework. Zusammenfassung Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien (IKT) werden zukünftig in Elektrizitätsverteilnetzen eine zentrale Rolle spielen, insbesondere mit Blick auf die Netzüberwachung und die Netzstabilisierung durch Lastmanagement (Demand Side Management, DSM). Der vorliegende Beitrag umreißt rechtliche Aspekte, die bei der Gestaltung der IKT-Infrastruktur eines Marktes für Lastmanagement einbezogen werden müssen und zeigt auf, wo aus rechtlicher Sicht noch Forschungs- oder Anpassungsbedarf besteht.

Abstract

Addressing the “storage gap” in future energy systems with a high penetration of renewable and volatile resources is a major challenge. Hybrid Energy Grids represent a possible solution to this problem by interconnecting energy systems and infrastructures and thus allowing energy to be transformed between various alternative forms of energy. This provides the means for higher flexibility along the energy system. The paper discusses the concept of Hybrid Energy Grids from an ICT perspective and presents a regulation framework to assess use cases in multi-domain Hybrid Energy Infrastructures. Zusammenfassung Eine der zentralen Herausforderungen der Energiewende ist der Umgang mit der „Speicherlücke“ im elektrischen Energieversorgungssystem. Hybridnetze stellen eine mögliche Lösung für die Anpassung von volatiler Stromerzeugung an die Nachfrage dar. Im Hybridnetz, das die Versorgungssysteme für Strom, Gas und Wärme aneinander koppelt, kann Energie von einer Form in eine andere transformiert werden. Der Artikel diskutiert Hybridnetze aus Sicht der IKT und präsentiert einen Ordnungsrahmen für Hybridnetzanwendungsfälle.

Kernel-Based Machine Learning with Multiple Sources of Information / Kernbasiertes Maschinelles Lernen mit mehreren Informationsquellen

Abstract

We present a new methodology for fusing information from multiple data sources - or kernels - in machine learning. Previous approaches promoted sparse combinations of kernels, which, however, may discard important information. We present a flexible approach based on ℓ p -norm regularization, allowing for non-sparse solutions. In a theoretical analysis we show lower and upper generalization bounds of order up to O(M/n), overcoming the best previously known upper bounds for the problem, which achieved O(√M/n). The computational experiments indicate that the novel algorithms are up to two orders of magnitude faster than previous approaches. Applications to computational biology and computer vision show accuracies that go beyond the stateof-the-art. Zusammenfassung Diese Arbeit gibt zunächst eine grundlegende Einführung in Theorie und Praxis des Maschinellen Lernens mit multiplen Kernen und skizziert den Stand der Forschung. Weiter entwickelt die Arbeit eine neue Methodologie des Lernens mit mehreren Kernen und beweist deren Effizienz und Effektivität. Sie entwickelt Algorithmen zur Optimierung des assoziierten mathematischen Programmes, die im Vergleich zu vorherigen Ansätzen um bis zu zwei Größenordnungen schneller sind. Unsere theoretische Analyse des Generalisierungsfehlers zeigt dabei Konvergenzraten mit Ordnungen von maximal O(M/n), frühere Analysen präzisierend, die bisher nur O(√M/n) erreichten. In Anwendungen auf zentrale Fragestellungen der Bioinformatik und des Maschinellen Sehens werden Vorhersagegenauigkeiten erreicht, die den bisherigen Stand der Forschung signifikant übertreffen, wodurch eine Grundlage zur Erschließung neuer Anwendungsfelder geschaffen wird.
