New readings in the Hieroglyphic-Luwian inscriptions of BURUNKAYA and KIZILDAĞ 4

Abstract

The paper presents results of collations of two Hieroglyphic-Luwian inscriptions of king Hartapu found in Central Anatolia and belonging to the post-Empire period (12th/11th century BC). In BURUNKAYA the improvements include: 1) identification of the first sign in the king’s name as a separate sign (instead of earlier <ha+ra/i>), probably L.417; 2) reading of one of the titles of the king as (DEUS)TONITRUS PURUS2-za/i (or EUNUCHUS2-za/i, phonetically kummaza) ‘priest of the Storm-God’; 3) identification of a part of the sign URBS/ REGIO in the second line of the inscription. In KIZILDAĞ 4 the discussion focuses on the central weathered part of the second line (§ 3); here, traces of two signs ANIMAL and of an animal head could be identified, which, in combination with other indications, allow the passage to be interpreted as an appeal to different visitors of the site to offer sacrificial animals to the Celestial Storm-God.

Il geroglifico cretese: nuovi metodi di lettura (con una nuova proposta di interpretazione del segno 044 i)

Abstract

In base a recenti analisi dei sigilli in pietra iscritti nel sistema di scrittura geroglifico cretese, ancora indecifrato, si puo proporre una nuova ipotesi di interpretazione della funzione di alcuni segni. Alcuni elementi che erano stati considerati come simboli decorativi sono stati re-interpretati, invece, come elementi semantici del repertorio geroglifico cretese. Nel valutare l’attendibilita di questa ipotesi a livello sistemico, proponiamo di attribuire ad alcuni segni del repertorio una funzione logografica, sottolineata dall’uso di filler decorativi che sembrano isolarne la posizione all’interno di una sequenza di sillabogrammi. Come esempio sotteso a questa metodologia, si e rivelata istruttiva una computazione statistica delle attestazioni del segno 044 i soprattutto per gli esempi integrati nelle sequenze ripetute fino ad oggi interpretate come ‘formule’. Alla luce di queste considerazioni, offriamo una nuova interpretazione dell’iconografia di questo segno. Dagli inizi degli studi sul geroglifico, il segno 044 i e stato associato alla rappresentazione di una ‘cazzuola’ (‘trowel’). Qui invece dimostriamo come sia piu plausibile e coerente associarlo alla raffigurazione del cosiddetto Petschaft, una forma funzionale e sofisticata di sigillo a una faccia, utilizzata in un periodo in cui il sistema amministrativo era basato sulla rendicontazione delle attivita attraverso l’uso di sigilli impressi su cretule d’argilla.

Cesnola Collection at the Turin University Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography

Abstract

A previously unpublished marble fragment from the Cesnola collection at the Turin University Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography bears an incomplete Phoenician inscription, a dedication to Eshmun-Melqart considered lost since 1869 (CIS I 26). The inscription allows to interpret the object bearing the dedication as a votive stone bowl from the late Classical Phoenician sanctuary of Kition-Batsalos in Cyprus, and it provides the opportunity to retrace the history of the Cesnola collection of Cypriote antiquities at the University Museum of Turin.

Récapitulatifs mycéniens: la série Ed de Pylos

Abstract

Étude des cinq tablettes récapitulatives de la série Ed en linéaire B de Pylos. Contrairement à ce qui est généralement admis, elles concernent les terres enregistrées non pas dans les séries Eb et/ou Ep, mais dans d’autres séries actuellement perdues. Ed 236, 317, 847 et 901 concernent un territoire proche de la localité de Pa-ki-ānes comme, par exemple, la ‘“campagne” de Pa-ki-ānes’ Pa-ki-ānios agros. La dernière tablette récapitulative, Ed 411, n’a aucun rapport perceptible avec les précédentes. Peut-être se rapportait-elle à la localité de Pa-to-wo-te.

Hermes a-re-ja (PY Tn 316): a new interpretation

Abstract

A long-standing consensus among Mycenaean scholars is that a-reja, an epithet of Hermes in the Pylos tablet Tn 316, must be somehow related to Ares, the war god. Hermes Areiās would be either a derivative in *-ās of Ares or, according to a recent suggestion, an abbreviated compound in the first member of which Ares would figure. The present paper argues for a different solution, taking a-re-ja (dat.) /aleii̯āi/ as an apposed noun epithet of the root *h2leu̯- ‘to ward off’. Nouns in apposition to divine names are not uncommon in 1st millennium Greek (type Artemis Εὐλοχία ‘Good Delivery’), and Hermes Aleia ‘(active) Protection’ or ‘Defense’ fits neatly with Hermes’ character as a helping deity and a god of boundaries, as shown both in the myths related to him and in several of his epicleses in alphabetic Greek. Aleiă is best taken as a feminine verbal derivative in *-ih2: this type is the source of other action nouns that are either personified or have a religious background, such as αἶσα ‘destiny’ and μοῖρα ‘fate’. Furthermore, Aleia can be viewed as an independent testimony of the *-u̯i̯- > *-i̯i̯- development in Mycenaean (type i-je-re-ja ‘priestess’).

Four probable terms in Mycenaean Greek pertaining to water management, some possible references, and broader implications

Abstract

1. Given the latest archaeological evidence, one should expect terms pertaining to water management and hydraulic engineering in the Linear B corpus. Identification of such terms will aid in current and future interpretations. 2. Archaeological context. 3. Four terms: (1) a-de-te /*arde(s)tḗr/ ‘irrigator’; (2) e-re-e-u /heleheu̯s/ ‘he pertaining to marshland’ (probably land improvement functionary in reciprocal management relationship with e-sa-re-u); (3) *po-te-re-u /*bothreu̯s/ (/*phothreus/?) ‘he pertaining to trenches’; (4) *u-do-no-o /(h)udr̥nohos/ ‘water-channeler’ (< IE *nei̯H-/*noi̯H- ‘channeling, directing, diverting, driving’, etc.). 4. Some possibilities: ko-ku-ro, pe-re-wa-ta, e-ko-me-no, and za-e-to-ro. 5. Discussion: water management and organization of labor recorded in the Linear B texts. 6. Conclusions.

Germanos/Soğukçam: nouvelle inscription paléo-phrygienne dans une aire cultuelle remarquable

Abstract

Le petit village de Germanos/Soğukçam (au nord d’Eskişehir) a fourni la plus longue inscription paléo-phrygienne actuellement connue, gravée sur un rocher à une extrémité d’une modeste élévation de terrain. A l’autre extrémité, au pied d’un rocher symétrique, ont été trouvés récemment les restes d’une seconde inscription, vraisemblablement très longue elle aussi, mais qui, sans doute gravée sur la paroi rocheuse, semble en avoir été détachée par un séisme: elle est donc fortement endommagée, mais quelques séquences lisibles révèlent un texte sans doute parallèle à celui qui était déjà connu. Indices d’une implantation humaine à proximité.

Abstract

Zusammenfassung Der poetische Text auf der Nordseite des Agorapfeilers in Xanthos wird nach eingehender Uberprufung neu ediert, ein Vokabular erstellt und die poetische Gestalt mit Abteilung der Strophen und versuchsweiser Abteilung der Verse (drei pro Strophe) und Halbverse rekonstruiert. Dieser Text unterscheidet sich deutlich von dem poetischen Text auf der Westseite: Es handelt sich offenbar um zwei verschiedene Gedichte, die allerdings beide von dem Dynasten Cheriga handeln. Nur der Text des ‚Nordgedichts‘ ist aber vollstandig, und er hat eine Ringstruktur, die sich aus der Rahmung einer langen, von H. Eichner entdeckten Rede des Wettergotts ergibt.
