Abstract

This contribution presents the technique of conversive translation, which has yet to receive much attention in Germany. The concept focuses on the use of verbs in the target language that describe the action from a different point of view. The situation depicted remains recognizable despite the shift, and neither are text meaning nor authorial intention impaired. The technique is applied when the target language offers no semantic equivalents, rules and conventions prevent their use, or a clearer statement is possible.

Abstract

Explicit or implicit references to circumstances pertaining to the source linguistic system make up a frequent category of cultural specificities in translating didactic and popularizing scientific texts, to which due consideration has not yet been given in translation studies. Based on the analysis of a number of published and unpublished (author-made) translations into Portuguese (and Spanish) of passages of English and German encyclopedia articles, textbooks, popularizing articles and popularizing books with scientific content, the present study addresses the problem of selecting the most adequate translation strategy for the two types of intercultural incongruences that arise from the aforementioned cultural specificities, viz., those derived from divergence in the language inventories and those derived from divergence in the constitution of the equivalent lexical units. In addition to avoiding nonsensical calques , three translation strategies are shown here as (varyingly) adequate to tackle such intercultural incongruences within the framework of communicative translation: reformulation , omission , and explanation .

Abstract

For many translators, translating certificates, documents, and deeds is one of the mainstays of their business. Yet, it seems that not being familiar with the particular conventions of this type of translation is not that uncommon. In this article, I argue that translating documents requires special knowledge and techniques which must be taught as a regular course during translation studies. The article presents a model of how this kind of translation can be incorporated in translation studies. It shows the necessity of teaching theory (general technical knowledge) and practice (translation) to give students a solid basis for their translation work.

Abstract

This article examines a 24-volume series of translated historical works published between 1886 and 1904 in Ternopil and Lviv situated in the Habsburg crownland of Galicia. Being initiated by a little group of both Ruthenian populists in Galicia and Ukrainian intellectuals from the Russian Empire, quite different historical monographs were translated into the Ukrainian language. The biblioteka included interlingual translations from Polish and Russian as well as intralingual translations between different varieties of Ukrainian. Not only the selection, composition and recontextualization, but also the adaption of the translations finally created a new historical master narrative.

Abstract

This article describes the language of the hip hop culture and how it differs from Black English rather than being merely a subcategory of it. Since the 1970s, when hip hop began to develop in the streets of New York City, people inside and even outside the hip hop community have been using its language. Now being among the best examples for globalization, hip hop has spread to almost any country in the world creating not only local interpretations of the original American English version but a greater acceptance for the whole or certain parts of the culture, such as the language. Its linguistic complexity clearly separates it from a simple accumulation of slang terms.

Since 1956, Lebende Sprachen [Living Languages] has been the leading specialist journal for interlingual and intercultural communication in Germany.
