Metasurface on integrated photonic platform: from mode converters to machine learning

Abstract

Integrated photonic circuits are created as a stable and small form factor analogue of fiber-based optical systems, from wavelength-division multiplication transceivers to more recent mode-division multiplexing components. Silicon nanowire waveguides guide the light in a way that single and few mode fibers define the direction of signal flow. Beyond communication tasks, on-chip cascaded interferometers and photonic meshes are also sought for optical computing and advanced signal processing technology. Here we review an alternative way of defining the light flow in the integrated photonic platform, using arrays of subwavelength meta-atoms or metalines for guiding the diffraction and interference of light. The integrated metasurface system mimics free-space optics, where on-chip analogues of basic optical components are developed with foundry compatible geometry, such as low-loss lens, spatial-light modulator, and other wavefront shapers. We discuss the role of metasurface in integrated photonic signal processing systems, introduce the design principles of such metasurface systems for low loss compact mode conversion, mathematical operation, diffractive optical systems for hyperspectral imaging, and tuning schemes of metasurface systems. Then we perceive reconfigurability schemes for metasurface framework, toward optical neural networks and analog photonic accelerators.

Abstract

Ultraviolet (UV) electro-optic modulation system based on graphene-plasmonic metamaterials nanomechanical system (NEMS) with superlubricity is investigated. Due to the strong optical absorption intensity of graphene in the UV region and the combination of metamaterial structure based on surface plasmons, the modulation depth of the UV NEMS electro-optic modulator approaches as high as 8.5 times compared to the counterpart modulator in visible light region. Meanwhile, the superlubricity significantly reduces the power consumption of the UV electro-optic modulation system due to its extremely low friction coefficient. It also significantly increases the response speed of the modulator, with response time down to nanoseconds. The modulation voltage can be equal to or less than 150 mV. The proposed electro-optic modulation system has a simple structure and high sensitivity, which is supposed to have important applications in UV optoelectronic devices and systems.

Abstract

A plethora of metalenses and diffractive lenses (“flat lenses”) have been demonstrated over the years. Recently, attempts have been made to stretch their performance envelope, particularly in the direction of wide-band achromatic performance. While achromatic behavior has been demonstrated, showing an actual improvement in imaging performance relative to conventional (non-chromatically corrected) flat lenses has remained a major challenge. The reasons for this are use of inappropriate performance metrics, lack of comparison to a baseline conventional design, and lack of a performance metric that combines signal-to-noise ratio and resolution. An additional problem is that different published flat lens designs use different first order parameters, so they cannot be compared. In this work we present an overall performance metric that will allow comparison of different types of flat lenses, even if their first order optical parameters are not the same. We apply this metric to several published achromatic flat lens designs and compare them to the equivalent conventional flat lens, which we consider as the lower bound for achromatic flat lens performance. We found that the performance of the achromatic flat lenses studied does not surpass that of a conventional diffractive lens. Use of this metric paves the way for future developments in the field of achromatic flat lenses, which will display proven progress.

Abstract

The advent of novel nonlinear materials has stirred unprecedented interest in exploring the use of temporal inhomogeneities to achieve novel forms of wave control, amidst the greater vision of engineering metamaterials across both space and time. When the properties of an unbounded medium are abruptly switched in time, propagating waves are efficiently converted to different frequencies, and partially coupled to their back-propagating phase-conjugate partners, through a process called time-reversal. However, in realistic materials the switching time is necessarily finite, playing a central role in the resulting temporal scattering features. By identifying and leveraging the crucial role of electromagnetic momentum conservation in time-reversal processes, here we develop a general analytical formalism to quantify time-reversal due to temporal inhomogeneities of arbitrary profile. We deploy our theory to develop a formalism, dual to spatial tapering, that enables the tailoring of a desired time-reversal spectral response, demonstrating its use for the realization of broadband frequency converters and filters.

Cavity-enhanced magnetic dipole resonance induced hot luminescence from hundred-nanometer-sized silicon spheres

Abstract

In this paper, we demonstrate the first example of phonon-assisted hot luminescence (PAHL) emission from silicon (Si) spheres (diameter > 100nm) without using the plasmonic effect or quantum confinement effect. Instead, we excite the hot luminescence of Si by a strong thin-film-cavity-enhanced magnetic dipole resonance. The thin-film cavity (80 nm SiO 2 /Ag) shows a strong co-enhancement with the magnetic dipole resonance of Si sphere (diameter = 120 nm). The concentrated electromagnetic fields induce significant light–matter interaction. Our Si sphere coupled with a thin-film cavity achieves a 10-fold field enhancement relative to the Si sphere without an enhancement substrate. Furthermore, we experimentally use cavity-enhanced magnetic dipole resonance to a 50-fold enhancement in PAHL. The measured internal quantum efficiency for the visible light emitted from the Si spheres was approximately 2.4%. Furthermore, we demonstrate the tunability of emission peaks merely by adjusting the sizes of Si spheres using thermal oxidation and etching processes. For comparison, we calculated the peak wavelength ( λ peak ) sensitivities (Δ λ peak /ΔDiameter) of Si spheres and Si QDs through Mie theory and effective mass approximation, respectively. The predicated peak sensitivities of the Si spheres ranged from 1.3 to 3.2; they were much more controllable than those of the Si QDs (200–400). Thus, the peak wavelengths of the PAHL of the Si spheres could be modulated and controlled much more precisely and readily than that of the Si QDs. With the tunability and strong electromagnetic field confinement, the cavity-enhanced magnetic dipole resonance appears to have great potential in the development of all-optical processing based on Si photonics.

Abstract

High-performance terahertz wave detectors at room temperature are still urgently required for a wide range of applications. The available technologies, however, are plagued by low sensitivity, narrow spectral bandwidth, complicated structure, and high noise equivalent power (NEP). Here, we have demonstrated a Weyl semimetal surface plasmon-enhanced high-performance terahertz wave detectors which are based on microdisk array deposited WTe 2 nanofilm epitaxially grown on GaN substrate for room temperature operation. With the microdisk array combined the WTe 2 layer, strong terahertz wave surface plasmon polaritons can be generated at the WTe 2 –air interfaces, which results in significant improvement in detecting performance. For the 40 μm diameter microdisk array, a detectivity ( D * ) of 5.52 × 10 12 cm Hz 1/2 pW −1 at 0.1 THz is achieved at room temperature. In addition, the responsivity ( R A ) of 8.78 A W −1 is also obtained. Such high-performance millimeter and terahertz wave photodetectors are useful for wide applications such as high capacity communications, walk-through security, biological diagnosis, spectroscopy, and remote sensing.

Abstract

Metalens has emerged as an important optical block in free-space optical systems, which shows excellent performance. Even the metalens based on gradient index (GRIN) profiles can be implemented for on-chip beam focusing behavior. However, for most previous schemes, the GRIN metalenses can only achieve on-chip beam focusing behavior in one dimension, which limits their applications in low-loss waveguide interconnecting or fiber-to-chip coupling. In this paper, an on-chip half Maxwell’s fisheye lens based on GRIN profiles with subwavelength features, integrated with silicon waveguides, is experimentally demonstrated. Benefitting from the index distribution and beam focusing characteristics of the half Maxwell’s fisheye lens, an on-chip beam transforming can be achieved for transverse electric (TE) fundamental mode in two waveguides with different heights and widths. The simulated 1 dB bandwidth can reach 1100 nm, which exhibits great prospects in integrated photonic circuits. The measured insertion loss of an on-chip 5.4 μm-length lens is less than 1 dB to connect a 220 nm-height, 8 μm-wide waveguide, and a 60 nm-height, 0.5 μm-wide waveguide in the wavelength range of 1280–1620 nm.

Abstract

Multispectral camouflage, especially for the infrared-microwave range, is an essential technology for the safety of facilities, vehicles, and humans. So far, it has been realized mainly by high infrared specular reflection and high microwave absorption. However, external infrared sources can expose the target through specular reflection; also, the heat production from microwave absorption can increase the infrared radiation. This work proposes a multispectral camouflage scheme based on hierarchical visible-infrared-microwave scattering surfaces to address these issues. The proposed device exhibits: (1) low infrared emissivity ( ε 8–14 μm = 0.17) and low infrared specular reflectivity ( R s 8–14 μm = 0.13), maintaining low infrared radiation and capability to overcome the presence of an external infrared source simultaneously; (2) high scattering in microwave range, with −10 dB radar cross section reduction bandwidth of 8–13 GHz, simultaneously achieving microwave camouflage and reducing the heat production; (3) tunability of color for visible camouflage. This work proposes a method to control scattering over visible-infrared-microwave bands, thereby introducing a new design paradigm for modern camouflage technology.

Abstract

Nanophotonic arithmetic circuits requiring cascaded Boolean operations are difficult to implement due to loss and footprint issues. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate plasmonic half-subtractor and demultiplexer circuits based on transmission-lines. Empowered by the unique polarization selectivity in the surface plasmon modal behaviors, both circuits are realized without cascading. The operations of the half-subtractor and demultiplexer can be performed using a single laser beam with three predefined linear polarizations. All of our experiments are performed using a 56 fs laser providing greater than 12.5 THz optical bandwidth. The experimental results are found in excellent quantitative accordance with numerical calculations. The photonic integrated circuit framework proposed in this work could pave the future avenue towards the realization of highly compact, multi-functional, on-chip integrated photonic processors.

Abstract

Vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) open a new perspective in various terahertz research. Multichannel and divergence controllable terahertz vortex beam generation holds the key to promoting the development of OAM related terahertz research. Here, we introduced and experimentally demonstrated quasi-perfect vortex beam (Q-PVB) with a controllable divergence angle independent of the topological charge and multichannel Q-PVBs generation with all-dielectric multifunctional metasurfaces. By superimposing specific phase functions together into the metasurfaces, multiple vortex beams and four-channel Q-PVBs with different topological charges are generated as well as focused at separated positions. High resolution characterization of terahertz electric field shows the good quality and broadband properties of Q-PVBs. Interestingly, compared with conventional perfect vortex beam; Q-PVB displays a smaller divergence angle and thinner ring width. The metasurfaces proposed here provide a promising avenue to realize multichannel vortex beams generation in compact terahertz systems; benefiting OAM related researches such as mode division multiplexing, vortex beam related plasmonic enhancement and spinning objective detection.

Abstract

Hierarchical and periodic nanostructures of dielectrics or metals are highly demanded for wide applications in optical, electrical, biological, and quantum devices. In this work, programmable plasmonic–photonic hierarchical nanostructures are fabricated using a facile and effective method with high controllability and stable reproducibility. The fabrication involves colloidal self-assembly, metal film deposition, and pulsed laser-induced dewetting in sequence for controllably pairing metal nanostructures on dielectric nanospheres in either large area or a local precision. Au nanostructures including Au nanocrown (AuNC), large Au nanosphere (AuNS), and multiple small Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been paired one-on-one on assembled SiO 2 nanosphere (SiO 2 NS) arrays, with size and shape controlled by correlating the laser fluence and irradiation time, and the Au film thickness. The fabricated hierarchical nanostructures demonstrate synergistic effect of the photonic effects from the monolayer SiO 2 NS arrays and the surface plasma resonance effect from the Au nanostructures. The dewetting induced metal film reshaping has been modeled theoretically corresponding to observed experimental results. We can directly “write” the plasmonic Au nanostructures on the photonic crystal array using a focused laser beam to form encode patterns, showing angle-dependent structural colors for anti-counterfeiting information storage and display in rigid/flexible and opaque/transparent devices. It provides a promising path to actively construct on-demand pixelated plasmonic–photonic arrays for optical multiplexing technology in sensing, information encryption, and display.

Abstract

We report the experimental observation of the periodic switching of topological edge states between two dimerized fs-laser written waveguide arrays. Switching occurs due to the overlap of the modal fields of the edge states from topological forbidden gap, when they are simultaneously present in two arrays brought into close proximity. We found that the phenomenon occurs for both strongly and weakly localized edge states and that switching rate increases with decreasing spacing between the topological arrays. When topological arrays are brought in contact with nontopological ones, switching in topological gap does not occur, while one observes either the formation of nearly stationary topological interface mode or strongly asymmetric diffraction into the nontopological array depending on the position of the initial excitation. Switching between topological arrays can be controlled and even completely arrested by increasing the peak power of the input signal, as we observed with different array spacings.

Abstract

The multipole expansion of a nano-photonic structure’s electromagnetic response is a versatile tool to interpret optical effects in nano-optics, but it only gives access to the modes that are excited by a specific illumination. In particular the study of various illuminations requires multiple, costly numerical simulations. Here we present a formalism we call “generalized polarizabilities”, in which we combine the recently developed exact multipole decomposition [Alaee et al., Opt. Comms. 407, 17–21 (2018)] with the concept of a generalized field propagator. After an initial computation step, our approach allows to instantaneously obtain the exact multipole decomposition for any illumination. Most importantly, since all possible illuminations are included in the generalized polarizabilities, our formalism allows to calculate the total density of multipole modes, regardless of a specific illumination, which is not possible with the conventional multipole expansion. Finally, our approach directly provides the optimum illumination field distributions that maximally couple to specific multipole modes. The formalism will be very useful for various applications in nano-optics like illumination-field engineering, or meta-atom design e.g. for Huygens metasurfaces. We provide a numerical open source implementation compatible with the pyGDM python package.

Abstract

Integrated planar lenses are critical components for analog optical information processing that enable a wide range of applications including beam steering. Conventional planar lenses require gradient index control which makes their on-chip realization challenging. Here, we introduce a new approach for beam steering by designing an array of coupled waveguides with segmented tails that allow for simultaneously achieving planar lensing and off-chip radiation. The proposed arrayed waveguide lens is built on engineering the evanescent coupling between adjacent channels to realize a photonic lattice with an equi-distant ladder of propagation constants that emulates the continuous parabolic index profile. Through coupled-mode analysis and full-wave numerical simulations, we show that selective excitation of waveguide channels enables beam steering with large field-of-views of ∼60°. The proposed arrayed waveguide lens can serve as a compact component in integrated photonic circuits for applications in imaging, sensing, and metrology.

Abstract

Spectroscopic photoemission microscopy is used to detect and quantify a ponderomotive shift in the energy of electrons that are emitted from a surface plasmon polariton focus. The focus is formed on an atomically flat Au(111) surface by an Archimedean spiral and is spatiotemporally separated from the circularly polarized light pulse used to excite the spiral. A spectroscopic analysis of electrons emitted from the focus exhibits a peaked above-threshold electron emission spectrum. From the shift of the peaks as function of laser power the field strength of the surface plasmon polariton was quantitatively determined without free parameters. Estimations of the Keldysh parameter γ = 4.4 and the adiabaticity parameter δ = 4700 indicate that electron emission occurs in a regime of multiplasmon absorption and nonlocalized surface plasmon fields.

Abstract

The strong coupling of molecules with surface plasmons results in hybrid states which are part molecule, part surface-bound light. Since molecular resonances may acquire the spatial coherence of plasmons, which have mm-scale propagation lengths, strong-coupling with molecular resonances potentially enables long-range molecular energy transfer. Gratings are often used to couple incident light to surface plasmons, by scattering the otherwise non-radiative surface plasmon inside the light-line. We calculate the dispersion relation for surface plasmons strongly coupled to molecular resonances when grating scattering is involved. By treating the molecules as independent oscillators rather than the more typically considered single collective dipole, we find the full multi-band dispersion relation. This approach offers a natural way to include the dark states in the dispersion. We demonstrate that for a molecular resonance tuned near the crossing point of forward and backward grating-scattered plasmon modes, the interaction between plasmons and molecules gives a five-band dispersion relation, including a bright state not captured in calculations using a single collective dipole. We also show that the role of the grating in breaking the translational invariance of the system appears in the position-dependent coupling between the molecules and the surface plasmon. The presence of the grating is thus not only important for the experimental observation of molecule-surface-plasmon coupling, but also provides an additional design parameter that tunes the system.

Abstract

We theoretically analyze the impact of angular selectivity on the radiative cooling performance of thermal emitters. We investigate the effect of spectral selectivity, environmental conditions, and parasitic heating on the minimum possible equilibrium temperature of the thermal emitter. We show that combining angular and spectral selectivity is necessary to reach deep subfreezing temperatures. We also show that angularly selective thermal emitters increase the cooling performance in humid environments, however, they require management of nonradiative heat transfer processes. We introduce a general scheme to realize angularly and spectrally selective absorption/emission using a thin film stack consisting of an angle dependent transmission filter overlayed on a selective thermal emitter. The thermal emitter total thickness is ∼16 μm, an order of magnitude less than previously proposed angular selective thermal emitters/absorbers and operates under s- and p-polarized light without using anisotropic layers. Under realistic conditions and reasonable parasitic heating, the proposed emitter can be cooled down to Δ T = −46 °C below ambient temperature. Our work highlights the advantages and drawbacks of angular selective thermal emitters towards practical and efficient radiative cooling devices.

Toward laser-induced tuning of plasmonic response in high aspect ratio gold nanostructures

Abstract

High aspect-ratio gold nanostructures sustain Fabry–Perot-like surface plasmon responses from infrared to visible light energies. We show that some resonances can be tuned by means of laser irradiation, where low energy modes stay unperturbed. After laser irradiation, gold nanowires’ tips are transformed into nanoparticles of various sizes joint to gold nanowires, producing high aspect-ratio half-dumbbells and dumbbells structures. The plasmonic behaviour of both the nanowires and the newly created nanostructures has been characterised by in-depth monochromated electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) developed in a transmission electron microscope (TEM) and state-of-the-art discrete dipole approximation (DDA) calculations. All these analyses serve as experimental proof of the selective tuning (or robustness) of the plasmonic modes of the nanostructures in a specific spectral range, which is of critical interest regarding applications for sensing devices, nano-sources or nanophotonic waveguide, as well as optical remote control.

Abstract

Metasurfaces have attracted broad interest thanks to their unprecedented capacity for electromagnetic wavefront manipulation. The compact, ultrathin and multifunctional metasurface calls for novel design principles. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a non-interleaved and non-segmented bidirectional Janus metasurface that encodes multiple functionalities in full-space scattering channels with different propagation directions and polarization in the microwave region. Specifically, by rotating and adjusting the elementary double-arrow-shaped structure within the same meta-atom, the independent phase control can be achieved in both cross-polarized transmission and co-polarized reflection components under oppositely directed incident waves. Our metasurface with broken mirror symmetry can fully exploit four independent information channels under opposite propagation directions. A series of proof-of-concept is constructed to validity of our methodology, and the simulations and experimental results further show that the proposed non-interleaved bidirectional metasurface can provide an attractive platform for various applications, ranging from structured light conversion, optical imaging, multifunctional optical information processing and others.
