Abstract

Probing light–matter interaction at the nanometer scale is one of the most fascinating topics of modern optics. Its importance is underlined by the large span of fields in which such accurate knowledge of light–matter interaction is needed, namely nanophotonics, quantum electrodynamics, atomic physics, biosensing, quantum computing and many more. Increasing innovations in the field of microscopy in the last decade have pushed the ability of observing such phenomena across multiple length scales, from micrometers to nanometers. In bioimaging, the advent of super-resolution single-molecule localization microscopy (SMLM) has opened a completely new perspective for the study and understanding of molecular mechanisms, with unprecedented resolution, which take place inside the cell. Since then, the field of SMLM has been continuously improving, shifting from an initial drive for pushing technological limitations to the acquisition of new knowledge. Interestingly, such developments have become also of great interest for the study of light–matter interaction in nanostructured materials, either dielectric, metallic, or hybrid metallic-dielectric. The purpose of this review is to summarize the recent advances in the field of nanophotonics that have leveraged SMLM, and conversely to show how some concepts commonly used in nanophotonics can benefit the development of new microscopy techniques for biophysics. To this aim, we will first introduce the basic concepts of SMLM and the observables that can be measured. Then, we will link them with their corresponding physical quantities of interest in biophysics and nanophotonics and we will describe state-of-the-art experiments that apply SMLM to nanophotonics. The problem of localization artifacts due to the interaction of the fluorescent emitter with a resonant medium and possible solutions will be also discussed. Then, we will show how the interaction of fluorescent emitters with plasmonic structures can be successfully employed in biology for cell profiling and membrane organization studies. We present an outlook on emerging research directions enabled by the synergy of localization microscopy and nanophotonics.

Abstract

Direct laser interference patterning (DLIP) is a laser-based surface structuring method that stands out for its high throughput, flexibility and resolution for laboratory and industrial manufacturing. This top–down technique relies on the formation of an interference pattern by overlapping multiple laser beams onto the sample surface and thus producing a periodic texture by melting and/or ablating the material. Driven by the large industrial sectors, DLIP has been extensively used in the last decades to functionalize metallic surfaces, such as steel, aluminium, copper or nickel. Even so, DLIP processing of non-metallic materials has been gaining popularity in promising fields such as photonics, optoelectronics, nanotechnology and biomedicine. This review aims to comprehensively collect the main findings of DLIP structuring of polymers, ceramics, composites, semiconductors and other non-metals and outline their most relevant results. This contribution also presents the mechanisms by which laser radiation interacts with non-metallic materials in the DLIP process and summarizes the developed surface functions and their applications in different fields.

Abstract

As an indispensable complement to an integer vortex beam, the fractional vortex beam has unique physical properties such as radially notched intensity distribution, complex phase structure consisting of alternating charge vortex chains, and more sophisticated orbital angular momentum modulation dimension. In recent years, we have noticed that the fractional vortex beam was widely used for complex micro-particle manipulation in optical tweezers, improving communication capacity, controllable edge enhancement of image and quantum entanglement. Moreover, this has stimulated extensive research interest, including the deep digging of the phenomenon and physics based on different advanced beam sources and has led to a new research boom in micro/nano-optical devices. Here, we review the recent advances leading to theoretical models, propagation, generation, measurement, and applications of fractional vortex beams and consider the possible directions and challenges in the future.

Abstract

To date, the plasmonic nanostructure utilized for magneto-optical (MO) enhancement has been limited to noble metals with resulted enhancement in the green-red part of visible spectrum. In this study, we fabricated a diffractive hexagonal array composed of Al nanoparticles (NPs) with a thin 7.5 nm ferromagnetic film and pushed the enhanced Faraday rotation (FR) into the blue to green range of the visible light. The freedom and ability to control the working spectral region in the whole visible range from 400 to 800 nm were also demonstrated by changing the lattice constant and the dielectric environment of plasmonic nanostructures. Particularly, in the blue range we obtained the maximum FR 0.57° at 410 nm with a broad boosting region around 0.5° from 400 to 500 nm. Moreover, the largest FR 1.66° was shown at 638 nm by tuning the dielectric environment into a higher refractive index medium. The results of our investigation demonstrate the potential of Al-based magnetoplasmonic effect and offer opportunities to push the MO spectral response out of visible range into the ultraviolet-blue range.

Abstract

Miniaturized, low-cost wavelength detectors are gaining enormous interest as we step into the new age of photonics. Incompatibility with integrated circuits or complex fabrication requirement in most of the conventionally used filters necessitates the development of a simple, on-chip platform for easy-to-use wavelength detection system. Also, intensity fluctuations hinder precise, noise free detection of spectral information. Here we propose a novel approach of utilizing wavelength sensitive photocurrent across semiconductor heterojunctions to experimentally validate broadband wavelength detection on an on-chip platform with simple fabrication process. The proposed device utilizes linear frequency response of internal photoemission via 2-D electron gas in a ZnO based heterojunction along with a reference junction for coherent common mode rejection. We report sensitivity of 0.96 μA/nm for a broad wavelength-range of 280 nm from 660 to 940 nm. Simple fabrication process, efficient intensity noise cancelation along with heat resistance and radiation hardness of ZnO makes the proposed platform simple, low-cost and efficient alternative for several applications such as optical spectrometers, sensing, and Internet of Things (IOTs).

Abstract

In this work, we propose and numerically investigate a two-dimensional microlaser based on the concept of bound states in the continuum (BIC). The device consists of a thin gain layer (Rhodamine 6G dye-doped silica) sandwiched between two high-contrast-grating layers. The structure supports various BIC modes upon a proper choice of topological parameters; in particular it supports a high- Q quasi-BIC mode when partially breaking a bound state in the continuum at Γ point. The optically-pumped gain medium provides sufficient optical gain to compensate the quasi-BIC mode losses, enabling lasing with ultra-low pump threshold (fluence of 17 μJ/cm 2 ) and very narrow optical linewidth in the visible range. This innovative device displays distinguished sensing performance for gas detection, and the emission wavelength sensitively shifts to the longer wavelength with the changing of environment refractive index (in order of 5 × 10 −4 ). The achieved bulk sensitivity is 221 nm/RIU with a high signal to noise ratio, and a record-high figure of merit reaches to 4420 RIU −1 . This ultracompact and low threshold quasi-BIC laser facilitated by the ultra-narrow resonance can serve as formidable candidate for on-chip gas sensor.

The effects of bending on plasmonic modes in nanowires and planar structures

Abstract

In this work, we investigate the effects of bends on the surface plasmon resonances in nanowires (NWs) and isolated edges of planar structures using electron energy loss spectroscopy experiments and theoretical calculations. Previous work showed that the sharp bends in NWs do not affect their resonant modes. Here, we study previously overlooked effects and analyze systematically the evolution of resonant modes for several bending angles from 30° to 180°, showing that bending can have a significant effect on the plasmonic response of a nanostructure. In NWs, the modes can experience significant energy shifts that depend on the aspect ratio of the NW and can cause mode intersection and antinode bunching. We establish the relation between NW modes and edge modes and show that bending can even induce antinode splitting in edge modes. This work demonstrates that bends in plasmonic planar nanostructures can have a profound effect on their optical response and this must be accounted for in the design of optical devices.

Abstract

Developing a simple, fast, and label-free method for discrimination between live cancer cells and normal cells in biological samples still remains a challenge. Here, a system is described that fulfills these features to analyze individual living cells. The system consists of a gold nanohole array biosensor plus a microscope optical design to isolate the spectral response of a single cell. It is demonstrated that differences in the spectral behavior between tumor (colorectal cancer cell lines and primary cells from colorectal cancer tissue) and non-tumor cells (peripheral blood mononuclear cells, skin fibroblasts and colon epithelial cells) are influenced by the actin cortex, which lies within the short penetration depth of the surface plasmon electromagnetic field. The efficacy of this system was assessed by the analysis of about one thousand single cells showing the highest discrimination capacity between normal colon epithelial cells and colorectal cancer cells from surgical specimens, with values of sensitivity and specificity ranging 80–100% and 87–100%, respectively. It is also demonstrated that cell discrimination capacity of the system is highly reduced by disrupting the formation of actin cortex. This plasmonic system may find wide applications in biomedicine and to study key cellular processes that involve the actin cortex, including proliferation, differentiation, and migration.

Abstract

Photonic computation has garnered huge attention due to its great potential to accelerate artificial neural network tasks at much higher clock rate to digital electronic alternatives. Especially, reconfigurable photonic processor consisting of Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) mesh is promising for photonic matrix multiplier. It is desired to implement high-radix MZI mesh to boost the computation capability. Conventionally, three cascaded MZI meshes (two universal N × N unitary MZI mesh and one diagonal MZI mesh) are needed to express N × N weight matrix with O ( N 2 ) MZIs requirements, which limits scalability seriously. Here, we propose a photonic matrix architecture using the real-part of one nonuniversal N × N unitary MZI mesh to represent the real-value matrix. In the applications like photonic neural network, it probable reduces the required MZIs to O ( N log 2 N ) level while pay low cost on learning capability loss. Experimentally, we implement a 4 × 4 photonic neural chip and benchmark its performance in convolutional neural network for handwriting recognition task. Low learning-capability-loss is observed in our 4 × 4 chip compared to its counterpart based on conventional architecture using O ( N 2 ) MZIs. While regarding the optical loss, chip size, power consumption, encoding error, our architecture exhibits all-round superiority.

Abstract

The possibility of arbitrary spatial control of incident wavefronts with the subwavelength resolution has driven research into dielectric optical metasurfaces in the last decade. The unit-cell based metasurface design approach that relies on a library of single element responses is known to result in reduced efficiency attributed to the inadequate accounting of the coupling effects between meta-atoms. Metasurfaces with extended unit-cells containing multiple resonators can improve design outcomes but their design requires extensive numerical computing and optimizations. We report a deep learning based design methodology for the inverse design of extended unit-cell metagratings. In contrast to previous reports, our approach learns the metagrating spectral response across its reflected and transmitted orders. Through systematic exploration, we discover network architectures and training dataset sampling strategies that allow such learning without requiring extensive ground-truth generation. The one-time investment of model creation can then be used to significantly accelerate numerical optimization of multiple functionalities as demonstrated by considering the inverse design of various spectral and polarization dependent splitters and filters. The proposed methodology is not limited to these proof-of-concept demonstrations and can be broadly applied to meta-atom-based nanophotonic system design and in realising the next generation of metasurface functionalities with improved performance.

Abstract

Understanding the mechanisms and controlling the possibilities of surface nanostructuring is of crucial interest for both fundamental science and application perspectives. Here, we report a direct experimental observation of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) formed near a predesigned gold step edge following single-pulse femtosecond laser irradiation. Simulation results based on a hybrid atomistic-continuum model fully support the experimental observations. We experimentally detect nanosized surface features with a periodicity of ∼300 nm and heights of a few tens of nanometers. We identify two key components of single-pulse LIPSS formation: excitation of surface plasmon polaritons and material reorganization. Our results lay a solid foundation toward simple and efficient usage of light for innovative material processing technologies.

Abstract

By combining transformation optics and van der Waals layered materials, an invisibility concentrator with a thin layer of α-MoO 3 wrapping around a cylinder is proposed. It inherits the effects of invisibility and energy concentration at Fabry–Pérot resonance frequencies, with tiny scattering. Due to the natural in-plane hyperbolicity in α-MoO 3 , the challenges of experimental complexity and infinite dielectric constant can be resolved perfectly. Through analytical calculation and numerical simulations, the relevant functionalities including invisibility, energy concentration and illusion effect of the designed device are confirmed, which provides guidelines for the subsequent experimental verification in future.

Abstract

Scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) and Fourier transform infrared nanospectroscopy (nano-FTIR) are emerging tools for physical and chemical nanocharacterization of organic and inorganic composite materials. Being based on ( i ) diffraction-limited illumination of a scanning probe tip for nanofocusing of light and ( ii ) recording of the tip-scattered radiation, the efficient suppression of background scattering has been critical for their success. Here, we show that indirect tip illumination via far-field reflection and scattering at the sample can produce s-SNOM and nano-FTIR signals of materials that are not present at the tip position – despite full background suppression. Although these artefacts occur primarily on or near large sample structures, their understanding and recognition are of utmost importance to ensure correct interpretation of images and spectra. Detailed experimental and theoretical results show how such artefacts can be identified and eliminated by a simple signal normalization step, thus critically strengthening the analytical capabilities of s-SNOM and nano-FTIR spectroscopy.

Abstract

Artificial nanostructures in metasurfaces induce strong spin–orbit interactions (SOIs), by which incident circularly polarized light can be transformed into two opposite spin components. The component with an opposite helicity to the incident light acquires a geometric phase and is used to realize the versatile functions of the metasurfaces; however, the other component, with an identical helicity, is often neglected as a diffused background. Here, by simultaneously manipulating the two spin components originating from the SOI in plasmonic metasurfaces, independent wavefields in the primary and converted spin channels are achieved; the wavefield in the primary channel is controlled by tailoring the dynamic phase, and that in the converted channel is regulated by designing the Pancharatnam–Berry phase in concurrence with the dynamic phase. The scheme is realized by generating optical lattice fields with different topologies in two spin channels, with the metasurfaces composed of metal nanoslits within six round-apertures mimicking the multi-beam interference. This study demonstrates independent optical fields in a dual-spin channel based on the SOI effect in the metasurface, which provides a higher polarization degree of freedom to modify optical properties at the subwavelength scale.

Abstract

A flat telescope (FTS), which incorporates an all-dielectric metasurface doublet (MD) based on hydrogenated amorphous silicon nanoposts, is proposed and demonstrated to achieve flexibly magnified angular beam steering that is sensitive to both light polarization and deflection direction. Specifically, for transverse-electric-polarized incident beams, the MD exhibits deflection magnification factors of +5 and +2, while for transverse magnetic polarization, the beam is steered in reverse to yield magnification factors of −5 and −2 in the horizontal and vertical directions, respectively. The proposed MD comprises cascaded metalenses, which can invoke polarization-selective transmission phases. The MD which emulates a set of convex and concave lenses renders positively increased beam deflection, whereas the case corresponding to a pair of convex lenses facilitates negatively amplified beam deflection. The essential phase profiles required for embodying the MD are efficiently extracted from its geometric lens counterpart. Furthermore, the implemented FTS, operating in the vicinity of a 1550 nm wavelength, can successfully enable enhanced beam steering by facilitating polarization-sensitive bidirectional deflection amplifications. The proposed FTS can be applied in the development of a miniaturized light detection and ranging system, where the beam scanning range can be effectively expanded in two dimensions.
