Abstract

The correct supply of water and nutrients is very important in hydroponic growing systems in order to use water and fertilizers efficiently and avoid stress situations. Usually, in low-cost hydroponic greenhouses using open hydroponic systems, the supply of water and nutrients is performed with a constant irrigation frequency, changing the dose to ensure that each irrigation cycle (each day) delivers the amount of nutrient solution needed for the plants, plus an additional 20 to 30% leaching fraction. This type of irrigation control may result in suboptimal conditions in many periods of time, although the total amount of irrigation solution supplied to the crop may be much larger than required. For an efficient irrigation the present theoretical study proposes that in open hydroponic systems there is a significant possibility to preserve water and nutrients, by shifting the irrigation control from a changeable irrigation dose according to evapotranspiration to an irrigation dose calculated according to the amount of used substrate in the bag, the characteristics of the substrate and the salt concentration of used water. The frequency of irrigation is recommended to be performed according to evapotranspiration. The proposed irrigation control is more rational than the currently used control method as it takes into account the characteristics on water holding capacity of the used substrates, resulting to a conservation of fertilizers and water.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to optimize the microwave-vacuum drying parameters (microwave power, drying time and fruit load) on the physical properties of dried Saskatoon berries. Response surface methodology combined with central composite rotatable design was used to observe the effect of microwave-vacuum drying processing variables and optimize the drying conditions for the physical properties as response variables (moisture content, rehydration ratio, hardness, L value and total color difference) of the microwave-vacuum dried Saskatoon berries. The response variables were effectively modeled as the function of independent variables for the regression as well as response surface modeling. The regression and response surface modeling indicated that increasing microwave power and drying time and deceasing fruit load decreased moisture content but increased rehydration ratio, hardness, L value and total color difference of the microwave-vacuum dried Saskatoon berries. Also, the numerical combining with graphical optimization indicated that microwave power (5.8 – 6.5 kW), drying time (52-59 min) and fruit load (10-10.25 Kg) were very effective to improve the studied physical properties of the dried Saskatoon berries. The findings are expected to be helpful for the process development of commercial scale microwave-vacuum drying of Saskatoon berries within the experimental range.

Abstract

This study was performed to assess several indices for identifying genotypes at germination stage with the best performance in salinity conditions. In order to evaluate the seed germination of barley genotypes in different levels of salt conditions, an experiment was conducted as factorial arrangement with a completely randomized design with 3 replications. The effect of salinity treatments was studied through an analysis of the germination, yielding results that show significant differences among genotypes. Stress tolerance index, stress tolerance, stress susceptibility index, germination reduction ratio, mean productivity and geometric mean productivity were used. The majority of used indices indicated that ESBYTM8910, 4 Shori and MBS8715 were the best barley genotypes showing the highest stress resistance for the greatest NaCl concentration. This result was similar to those obtained from the analysis of variance and statistical comparison of means of genotypes germination percentages. There were positive and strong correlations of germination percentage in normal and stress condition with STI in high levels of salinity. Thus, this correlation seems to be a useful indicator of tolerant genotypes at this stage.

Abstract

Physalis (Physalis peruviana L.), also known as cape gooseberry or ground-cherry, plays an important role in nutrition as an excellent base for dietetic products. Highly valued for its unique flavour, texture and colour, recent research has shown that physalis fruit is rich in many beneficial compounds. In this study, the diameter and mass of physalis fruits were measured, which can be used to calculate other biometric characteristics of the fruit, such as: surface area, volume or density. Other physical properties were measured, namely the colour coordinates, by means of a Chroma meter, whilst the textural parameters firmness and elasticity were measured with a texturometer. The following values were calculated for the physalis fruits analysed in the present work: 1.69 cm for average diameter; 8.98 cm 2 for surface area, 2.51 cm 3 for volume; 2.77 g for mass was, and 1.10 g/cm 3 for density. The colour coordinates were 56.72 for lightness, 16.69 for redness, and 58.11 for yellowness. Skin firmness and elasticity were evaluated for texture attributes, and their average values were 2.40 N and 2.94 mm, respectively. The results of this work are in accordance with data reported by other authors in the literature.

Abstract

Some influential variables that are import to farmers in Northern Bangladesh regarding land use decisions for farmlands, where such options are possible, were explored in this study. A multi-stage sampling procedure was followed to select the study area and the sampling unit. We selected four sub-districts in Mymensingh district, a suitable area in Bangladesh for freshwater fish farming: Mucktagachha, Trishal, Phulpur, and Bhaluka. The PROMETHEE (Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment Evaluations) method was used to remove the problem of simultaneously selecting all criteria for land use decision-making, hence revealing the effects of some important variables on decisions on land use made by farmers. PROMETHEE model gave equal preference to rice over fish farming after all criteria were considered simultaneously. Although fish farming total return was about 6 times higher than rice farming, farmers were more interested in rice farming because of three major influential criteria: it requires less labor, operates at lower costs, and has zero conversion cost associated with rice farming.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to investigate the genetic structure of the 20 F1s rapeseed hybrids established from five female moderate maturing lines and four early maturing male testers, determine parents showing general combining ability (GCA) and assess crosses demonstrating specific combining ability (SCA). Significant mean squares of lines and testers determined GCA and confirmed the presence of additive genes that were influencing the traits, while the significance of line×tester interactions indicated the importance of SCA of parents and demonstrated the importance of dominance or non-additive genetic effects. Significant variance of parents vs. crosses revealed significant average heterosis for all the traits except first pod height and seeds per pod. High narrow-sense heritability estimates for number of branches and pod length indicated the importance of additive genetic effects for these traits. Significantly positive correlation was exhibited between GCA effects on pods on main raceme and seed yield and, therefore, the GCA effect on pods on main raceme can be used as indirect selection criterion for improvement of seed yield. The crosses L41×Foma2, Zafar×R42 and L22B×R38 recorded significant positive SCA effects and high mean values of seed yield of 3400, 3311.3 and 2904.2 kg ha-1, respectively.

Abstract

Although consumer demand for food products with more health functions has stimulated expansion of a number of food industries in the past years, not much is known about drivers of market participation and consumption of such foods in Africa, and Nigeria in particular. Consequently, the study examined factors influencing purchase decision and consumption-expenditure on garlic in South-West Nigeria. Descriptive statistics and the Heckman selection model were employed for data analysis. Results show that more than 70.0% of the respondent households became aware of the health benefits of garlic through media, friends/family and health workers, with more than 75.0% consuming garlic in raw and processed forms. The results of the Heckman selection model indicated that sex (p<0.05) and awareness of household head about the health benefits of garlic (p<0.01) substantially enhanced decisions to consume garlic while household income (p<0.01), household size (p<0.01), educational status (p<0.1) and occupation of the household head (p<0.1) significantly influenced consumption-expenditure. The study recommends public education programmes on the health benefits of garlic, efforts to enhance access to formal education and improvement in household income as strategies that could stimulate and raise garlic consumption. Our findings hold enormous implications for the sustainability of the garlic market in terms of research and product development as it relates to the forms in which consumers prefer to consume garlic and strategies for spreading knowledge about its health benefits in order to achieve greater demand in the country.

Abstract

This study compares the impacts of different factors on agricultural water management in the Americas in the last 50 years. The number of 18 indexes (as the main and sub-main indexes) was selected to assess agricul- tural water management based on their importance and other indexes were not studied due to lack of adequate data. Changes in the main indexes in 2011 showed that concurrent values across regions varied according to the nature of the indexes and conditions of the countries. In the next step, the value of area equipped for irrigation/ cultivated area (10th index) was estimated using the other main indexes. As a result, a list of strengths and weakness for agricultural water management in the Americas in the last 50 years was created. However, The only way to meet sustainable development is to learn from past expe- riences for the improvement of agricultural water man- agement. The desirability of condition for agricultural water management is difficult for Central America (except Belize, which presents a fair status) and it is less than 40% for Greater Antilles (with the exception of Dominican Republic 55%). Guyana is the best country for agricultural water management because its desirability of condition (72%) is more than all the countries in Americas.

Abstract

An investigation was carried out to determine the ability of foliar fertilizers and growth regulators to prevent pre-harvest drop and enhance navel orange fruit quality. Fifteen year old trees of the Thompson Navel orange variety were sprayed with aqueous solutions of one of the following: methanol (0.13%), calcium nitrate (0.25%), zinc sulfate (1%) + urea (0.5%), fermented sugar- cane extract (2.8%), salicylic acid (1 or 3 mM), citric acid (5 mM), or 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) (0.002%). Results indicated that foliar treatment with 2,4-D reduced fruit drop (2.6%) as compared to the control (15.2%). Fruit decay was delayed and flavor improved by 5 mM citric acid. Weight loss was reduced after 3mM salicylic acid applica- tion, while methanol (0.13%), salicylic acid (1 and 3 mM) and citric acid (5 mM) caused a delay in fruit coloring.

Abstract

Aminochelate fertilizers are the latest novel- ties regarding plant nutrition in agricultural production systems. They are part of the modern formulae of fertiliz- ers which are synthesized based on various amino acids, mainly glycine. In recent years, they have had a rapid growth in the marketplace. Their rapid growth in formula- tions, manufacturing, diversity and application is mainly due to the novel understandings regarding diverse roles of amino acids in plant metabolism. Compared to routine fertilizers or other commercially synthetic chelators such as EDTA; however, aminochelates represent a safer and more efficient form of fertilizer, resulting in better plant performance and less environmental risks. Aminochelates represent effective fertilizers for both soil and particularly for foliar applications. Despite, aminochelates having quickly dominated the fertilizer markets in many coun- tries, there is not enough scientific data and information regarding detailed responses of crops to these types of fer- tilizers. This in part, may be due to their mixed composi- tion of several nutrient elements, giving various nutrients effects, meaning that conducting scientific experiments and concluding remarks, , would be very difficult. This review provides information concerning different aspect of aminochelate fertilizers including their history, struc- ture, types, value and effects on agricultural crops.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to examine cattle and deer utilization of nine different varieties of forage cereal grains. Yield and forage quality were also determined as well as apparent ruminal digestibility of select forage cereal grains. Cattle preferred annual ryegrass, followed by the oat varieties compared to wheat varieties. Deer preferred the wheat varieties and utilized the plots for the first nine weeks of the study but utilization decreased when cattle were introduced to the area. The annual cereal rye yielded the most tons per hectare followed by wheat varieties then the oat and other rye varieties. Apparent ruminal digestibility was determined through the use of fermenters that were randomly assigned to one of the following primary forage source: 1) fescue grass hay (GH); 2) ryegrass (RYE); 3) Buck Master Wheat (BMW); or 4) Buck Forage Oat (BFO). Dry matter digestibility was greater for RYE and BMW compared to GH and BFO. Neutral detergent fiber and CP digestibility were greater for RYE and BMW compared to GH and BFO. All varieties have the ability to extend grazing but more research needs to be done to determine best management practices for common use land areas.

Abstract

In this study we focused on nitrification inhibition properties from tropical and subtropical plants; Acrocomia totai (palm tree) and Brachiaria humidicola (grass plant). Hexane extracted seed oil as well as dry powder of seed covers was applied in a quick nitrification bioassay for 24 or 50 hours to investigate their effects on nitrification process. Similarly B. humidicola shoot homogenates were applied in the same quick nitrification bioassay for their potential inhibitory effects on nitrification. Results showed that seed oil as well as seed covers from A. totai were significantly inhibited the nitrification rates in the quick nitrification bioassay test compared to distilled water control. In a separate experiment, it was found that shoots but not roots homogenates from B. humidicola grasses were efficiently retarded nitrification rates compared to water control. Therefore, including these plant genotypes together with main crops (intercropping) or as alternative crops, could effectively reduce soil nitrification process and leading to better Nutilization.

Abstract

This paper provides a concise summary and dis- cussion of key results of the study “Sustainable biomass potentials for biofuels in competition to food, feed, bioen- ergy and industrial material use in Germany, Europe and the world”. The scenario-analysis developed in this paper differentiates between the global level and the European Union level, providing a perspective on future trends and developments. Specifically, results of the present study provide a detailed view of possible scenarios for a sus- tainable supply of biomass until the year 2050, and of the development of demand in all biomass sectors: food, feed, chemicals and materials, bioenergy and biofuels. Due to this approach, one can clearly see under which assump- tions global supply shortages or a sufficient coverage of demand may occur.

Abstract

A growing biofuels industry requires the devel- opment of effective methods to educate farmers, govern- ment, and agribusiness about biofuel feedstock produc- tion if the market is going to significantly expand beyond first generation biofuels. Extension and outreach educa- tion provides a conduit for important research, knowledge and information to be disseminated to producers and agri- business that can utilize the information to help establish biofuel feedstock enterprises and markets. This paper presents the results of a survey administered to extension and outreach agents in 10 western states in the United States to assess the current state of knowledge of exten- sion and outreach agents, their needs regarding feedstock production, and mechanisms used for outreach to their clientele. Results indicate that extension and outreach agents require additional training on biofuel feedstock production, especially economic and logistical aspects. In addition, extension and outreach agents showed a pref- erence for learning using alternative methods, including field days, seminars, face-to-face, community education events, and the internet. Results differ by region and type of extension and outreach agent.

Abstract

The industrialization of peaches gives origin to leftover remaining from fruit canning, juice or jam production. The transformation of leftover to dietary fiber (DF) concentrates represents a strategy that can be incorporated in productive processes tending to optimize raw material use. In the present research, DF was obtained from peach (Prunus persica L.) using an ethanol treatment followed by dehydration. The influence of four factors: time and temperature of ethanol treatment prior to drying step, ratio of ethanol to sample and drying temperature using microwave or convective drying on different properties (yield, hydration properties, oil holding capacity and apparent density) of the concentrate obtained, were studied through a two level orthogonal design. Yield ranged between 4.38-7.27 g/100g for all the conditions explored. Time and temperature of the ethanol extraction affected properties when a subsequent convective drying was employed. The effect of the ethanol/sample ratio and of the temperature of drying on oil holding capacity and hydration properties was mainly detected on samples dried by microwave technique. The results obtained provide insight into the effect of processing of plant residues on the properties of DF concentrates obtained and on their potential performance as ingredients or additives for the food industry. It could be concluded that the drying technique is a key factor in relation to the properties of dietary fiber enriched fractions isolated from peach. Microwave drying allowed to produce fractions with functional properties that can be modulated through the use of different relations of ethanol to sample ratio and drying temperatures.

Abstract

We propose a brief analysis of the “Innovating for Sustainable Growth: A Bioeconomy for Europe” by the European Commission. With this aim, we have used a multiscalar and inductive methodology, a critical, paradigmatic and deconstructionist approach. Special attention is given to the language because it influences the individual’s perceptions and the collective imagination that is the base of ideas, decisions and actions. The main results concern the conceptual and ideological matrix, the population-resource relation and the participation process. We argue that the technocentric and anthropocentric approaches as well as the neoliberal vision are all the same in regards to both the old “fossil” economy and the most recent bioenergy sector’s development. The latter could offer important lessons to avoid errors, contradictions and paradoxes. In addition, the asymmetry regarding the distribution of biomass and advanced level of techno-knowledge could lead to new forms of ecological exploitation, economic domination and power relations on the different levels of spatial scale. This could put in to question the territorial sovereignty. Finally, the EU bioeconomy model cannot be considered an economic revolution because it is focused on the supply side in support of market demand and economic growth, without taking into account the production model and scale. So, it simply appears as one of many steps of the “industrial revolution”: from fossil sources to biobased ones. For this reason, it is very important to make the choice process a democratic one, bringing in the Member State Parliaments on the discussion on the UE biobased policy, as well as opening a broad public debate about the prospects and effects of this choice. In regard to this, the paper could be of interest because it aspires to assume and motivate a more systemic prospective in evaluations and policy decisions.

Abstract

The inclusion of higher plants in bio-regenerative life support systems has been suggested to contribute to a nutritious menu, increase food acceptability and provide psychological benefits to the crew. In 2017, the EDEN ISS project will deploy a greenhouse module to the Neumayer Station III in Antarctica. This system will be used to advance bio-regenerative life support system technologies and operations. An initial survey was conducted to improve crop selection for the EDEN ISS greenhouse module by further investigating the aspects of food acceptability and psychological benefits of crop cultivation. Former members of the overwintering crews of the three Neumayer stations were asked about their fresh food and vegetable preferences and about further aspects concerning Antarctic plant production. Results confirm the benefits of growing higher plants in isolated and confined environments and offer insight on the importance of crop selection aspects like taste, texture, pungency and colour.

Abstract

Potato is an important staple crop in East Africa. Most of the seed tubers are propagated in informal systems, whereby the tubers become deteriorated and contaminated, resulting in low crop yields. Potato breeding has not resulted in significantly improved varieties that overcome these constraints. Recently, true potato hybrid breeding technology has been developed, whereby diploid hybrids are generated by crossing between homozygous inbred parent lines. The first series of experimental hybrids were pre-screened in The Netherlands and ten representative hybrids were tested in East-Africa, whereby the yield of the best hybrid was 29 ton/ha. These results show the great potential of hybrid potato for East Africa.

Abstract

Phytophthora infestans is the causal agent of late blight, the most devastating disease of potato worldwide. The P. infestans genome encodes potentially polymorphic genes that evolve continually to evade the recognition of plant R genes, though it has hundreds of predicted and conserved effector proteins recognised by the plant. The gene Scr74 encodes a predicted 74-amino acid secreted cysteine-rich protein belonging to a highly polymorphic gene family within P. infestans. This study screened the recognition of Scr74 genes in wild potato genotypes from August 2013 to January 2014 in the Plant Breeding Laboratory of Wageningen University, the Netherlands. To identify the recognition of the Scr74 gene, we grew potato genotypes in the green house for PVX assays, detached leaf assays and molecular work. Twenty-seven good-quality sequences of the Scr74 gene variant with a length of 74 amino acids were found and more frequent amino acid variation was detected on the mature protein. Seventeen Scr74 constructs were identified as diversified and two effectors were strongly recognised by wild S. verrucosum genotypes via effectoromics from the PVX assay. A strong plant cell death hypersensitive response (HR) was recorded on wild S. verrucosum and S. tuberosum genotypes from the detached leaf assay. This recognition seems to be a useful indicator for the presence of a resistance gene (s) to the polymorphic effectors of P. infestans (as it has seen on Scr74 gene) in the wild potato genotypes.

Evaluation of suitability of substituting wheat flour with sweet potato and tiger nut flours in bread making

Abstract

The study was carried out to assess the nutritional quality and palatability of bread after partially substituting wheat flour (WF) with sweet potato (SF) and tiger nut (TF) flours. Sweet potato (yellow fleshed) and tiger nut flours were used to substitute wheat flour at 5, 10, 15 and 20% level each. The bread quality of each of these composite flours evaluated on the basis of their nutritional quality, physical properties and acceptability by consumers. The findings indicate slight decrease in the protein content of the bread samples with increasing sweet potato and tiger nut supplementation (6.97% in 100% wheat flour to 3.80% in 20% level of substitution) while crude fibre content increased with increased sweet potato and tiger nut substitution (2.29% in 100% WF to 2.80% in 20% substitution) but there was no significant change (<0.05) in the ash and fat contents. Carbohydrate which was the major component ranged from 73.47 – 79.42%. Findings on the study on the functional properties showed that water absorption capacity increases with increase in the level of sweet potato and tiger nut substitution (0.54g/ml in 100% WF to 1.12g/ml in 20% level of substitution). The loaf volume and specific volume of the bread samples decreased significantly with increase in the level of substitution with sweet potato and tiger nut and it ranged from 320cm3 (in 100% wheat flour) – 216cm3 (in 20% substitution) and 1.55cm3/g (in 100% wheat flour) to 0.98cm3/g (in 20% level of substitution) respectively. Bread from 100% wheat flour scored the highest in all the sensory properties evaluated. There was no significant difference between the control and bread from 5% level of substitution in terms of all the sensory parameters evaluated however bread from higher levels of substitution varied significantly with the control. All the bread samples were acceptable in all the parameters evaluated except bread from 20% level of substitution. The study concludes the potential health and sensory benefits of partial substitution of sweet potato and tiger nut to wheat flour in bread making through improved fibre content, improved taste and to promote sweet potato and tiger nut utilization.

Evaluation of CIP bred clones for expansion of potato production in the coastal areas of Bangladesh

Abstract

A set of International Potato Center (CIP)-bred potato clones was evaluated for their salt tolerance and productivity in replicated field trials in three coastal districts of Bangladesh, namely, Chittagong, Patuakhali and Satkhira. In each year of experimentation from 2011 to 2015, salinity levels increased progressively during the season and varied with time and place. Evaluation and selection were carried out using GGE biplot analysis and mean yield across the test sites; and the best performing clones were selected for the next year’s trial. Of the original fifteen test clones, two (CIP 301029.18 and CIP 396311.1) were selected for evaluation in the regional yield trial with cvs. Diamant and Asterix as checks. In the regional yield trial, across locations, CIP 301029.18 was the highest (21.8 ton/ha) and CIP 396311.1 (21.3 ton/ha) was the 2nd highest yielder such that CIP 301029.18 produced 64.0% higher yield and CIP 396311.1 produced 32.4% higher yield compare to their corresponding check varieties Diamant and Asterix. Similar ranking was found under farmers’ field conditions. Finally, these 2 clones CIP 301029.18 & CIP 396311.1 were found promising for their good productivity under saline conditions and CIP 396311.1 was released by the National Seed Board in Bangladesh in 2016.
