Abstract

We use stochastic dynamics to develop the patterned attractor of a non-local extended system. This is done analytically using the stochastic path perturbation approach scheme, where a theory of perturbation in the small noise parameter is introduced to analyze the random escape of the stochastic field from the unstable state. Emphasis is placed on the specific mode selection that these types of systems exhibit. Concerning the stochastic propagation of the front we have carried out Monte Carlo simulations which coincide with our theoretical predictions.

Abstract

In the present work we study the deterministic spin dynamics of two interacting anisotropic magnetic particles in the presence of an external magnetic field using the Landau-Lifshitz equation. The interaction between particles is through the exchange energy. We study both conservative and dissipative cases. In the first one, we characterize the dynamical behavior of the system by monitoring the Lyapunov exponents and bifurcation diagrams. In particular, we explore the dependence of the largest Lyapunov exponent respect to the magnitude of applied magnetic field and exchange constant. We find that the system presents multiple transitions between regular and chaotic behaviors. We show that the dynamical phases display a very complicated topology of intricately intermingled chaotic and regular regions. In the dissipative case, we calculate the final saturation states as a function of the magnitude of the applied magnetic field, exchange constant as well as the anisotropy constants.

Abstract

By means of systematic simulations, we study the motion of discrete solitons in weakly dissipative Toda lattices (TLs) with periodic boundary conditions, resonantly driven by a spatially staggered time-periodic (ac) force. A complex set of alternating stability bands and instability gaps, including scattered isolated stability points, is revealed in the parametric plane of the soliton’s velocity and forcing amplitude for a given size of the circular lattice. The analysis is also reported for the circular TL including a single light- or heavymass defect. The stability chart as a whole shrinks and eventually disappears with the increase of the lattice’s size and strength of the mass defect. Qualitative explanations to these findings are proposed. We also report the dependence of the stability area on the initial position of the soliton, finding that the area is largest for some intersite position. For a pair of solitons traveling in opposite directions, there exist regimes where both solitons survive periodic collisions in small-size lattices.

Abstract

Wireless sensor networks are an important technology for making distributed autonomous measures in hostile or inaccessible environments. Among the challenges they pose, the way data travel among them is a relevant issue since their structure is quite dynamic. The operational topology of such devices can often be described by complex networks. In this work, we assess the variation of measures commonly employed in the complex networks literature applied to wireless sensor networks. Four data communication strategies were considered: geometric, random, small-world, and scale-free models, along with the shortest path length measure. The sensitivity of this measure was analyzed with respect to the following perturbations: insertion and removal of nodes in the geometric strategy; and insertion, removal and rewiring of links in the other models. The assessment was performed using the normalized Kullback-Leibler divergence and Hellinger distance quantifiers, both deriving from the Information Theory framework. The results reveal that the shortest path length is sensitive to perturbations.

Abstract

Suitable asymmetric microstructures can be used to control the direction of motion in microorganism populations. This rectification process makes it possible to accumulate swimmers in a region of space or to sort different swimmers. Here we study numerically how the separation process depends on the specific motility strategies of the microorganisms involved. Crucial properties such as the separation efficiency and the separation time for two bacterial strains are precisely defined and evaluated. In particular, the sorting of two bacterial populations inoculated in a box consisting of a series of chambers separated by columns of asymmetric obstacles is investigated. We show how the sorting efficiency is enhanced by these obstacles and conclude that this kind of sorting can be efficiently used even when the involved populations differ only in one aspect of their swimming strategy.

Abstract

In this paper we analyze the impact of network size on the dynamics of epidemic spreading. In particular, we investigate the pace of infection in overpopulated systems. In order to do that, we design a model for epidemic spreading on a finite complex network with a restriction to at most one contamination per time step, which can serve as a model for sexually transmitted diseases spreading in some student communes. Because of the highly discrete character of the process, the analysis cannot use the continuous approximation widely exploited for most models. Using a discrete approach, we investigate the epidemic threshold and the quasi-stationary distribution. The main results are two theorems about the mixing time for the process: it scales like the logarithm of the network size and it is proportional to the inverse of the distance from the epidemic threshold.

Abstract

Using the first-principles band-structure method, we have calculated the structural and electronic properties of zincblende TlAs, TlP, GaAs and GaP compounds and their new semiconductor TlxGa1−x AsyP1−y quaternary alloys. Structural properties of these semiconductors are obtained with the Perdew and Wang local-density approximation. The lattice constants of TlxGa1−x As, TlxGa1−x P ternary and TlxGa1−x AsyP1−y quaternary alloys were composed by Vegard’s law. Our investigation on the effect of the doping (Thallium and Arsenic) on lattice constants and band gap shows a non-linear dependence for TlxGa1−x AsyP1−y quaternary alloys. The band gap of TlxGa1−x AsyP1−y , E g(x, y) concerned by the compositions x and y. To our awareness, there is no theoretical survey on TlxGa1−x AsyP1−y quaternary alloys and needs experimental verification.

Abstract

The structure of chalcogenide glassy semiconductors in three-component systems of Ge-As-Se and As-Sb-Se has been studied by means of both NQR (nuclear quadrupole resonance) and EPR (electron paramagnetic resonance) spectroscopy. It is investigated that in the glasses of both systems the value of the electric field gradient at the resonating nuclei grows with increasing concentration of the clusters As2Se3 and Sb2Se3, thereby increasing the NQR resonance frequencies. It appears that for the Ge-As-Se system the structural transition from a two-dimensional to three-dimensional structure occurs at average coordination number $\bar r$ = 2.45. The EPR spectral parameters of glasses depend on the composition, the average coordination number and the temperature, and these are discussed. The effect of ”ageing” for CGS (chalcogenide glassy semiconductors) of As-Sb-Se system due to partial crystallization of the sample is observed from the EPR spectra.

Abstract

This paper deals with the boundary layer flow and heat transfer of nanofluids over a stretching wedge with velocity-slip boundary conditions. In this analysis, Hall effect and Joule heating are taken into consideration. Four different types of water-base nanofluids containing copper (Cu), silver (Ag), alumina (Al2O3), and titania (TiO2) nanoparticles are analyzed. The partial differential equations governing the flow and temperature fields are converted into a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations using a similarity transformation. The resulting similarity equations are then solved by using the shooting technique along with the fourth order Runge-Kutta method. The effects of types of nanoparticles, the volume fraction of nanoparticles, the magnetic parameter, the Hall parameter, the wedge angle parameter, and the velocityslip parameter on the velocity and temperature fields are discussed and presented graphically, respectively.
