The New Keynesian Microfoundation of Macroeconomics

Abstract

Zusammenfassung Die Neukeynesianische Makroökonomie (NKM) beruht auf dem Dogma, dass jegliche Makroökonomie vollständig aus den Optimierungsbedingungen der Mikroökonomie hervorgehen müsse. Das Grundmodell geht von den intertemporalen Entscheidungen der Haushalte über Arbeitsangebot und Konsumnachfrage aus. Bei unterstellter Vollbeschäftigung erlauben hier perfekte Finanzmärkte eine reibungslose Verteilung des Konsums über die Zeit. Koordinationsprobleme zwischen Sparen und Investieren, die bei Keynes im Zentrum der Makrotheorie stehen, spielen keine Rolle. Eine gewisse Übereinstimmung mit der Empirie, insbesondere mit Blick auf die Persistenz von Output und Inflation, wird durch eine nachträgliche Abwandlung der Nutzenfunktionen und Verhaltensannahmen erreicht. Der Vorwurf gegenüber traditionellen makroökonomischen Ansätzen, sie operierten “ad hoc” und ohne mikrotheoretisches Fundament, fällt auf die NKM selbst zurück, da sie ihre Bausteine in opportunistischer Weise nach den Erklärungszielen wählt. Das reduzierte und erweiterte Makromodell der NKM, das neben Erwartungs-Leads auch Lags aufweist, ist ein nützlicher Ausgangspunkt der Forschung, wenn ein Pluralismus der mikroökonomischen Fundamente zugelassen wird. Die Bezugnahme auf einen “repräsentativen Akteur” ermöglicht zwar einen direkten Übergang von der mikro- zur makroökonomischen Ebene in der NKM, verstellt jedoch einen Zugang zu den Problemen unvollkommener Information und heterogener Erwartungen.

Effects of population development on the economic level of the regions in Germany

Abstract

Zusammenfassung Gegenstand des Artikels ist die Schätzung einer Translog-Produktionsfunktion, die die Auswirkungen der Bevölkerungsentwicklung auf die Produktion heute und im Jahr 2020 betrachtet. Die Ergebnisse deuten auf eine Entwicklung hin, die zu steigenden Disparitäten führt. Schon heute ist ein starkes Stadt-Land-Gefälle zu beobachten. Der Einbezug der Bevölkerung im Jahr 2020 unterstützt dieses Ergebnis zusätzlich mit dem Nachweis eines Ost-West-Gefälles zwischen den östlichen eher peripheren und den westlichen verstädterten Regionen. In den weiteren Betrachtungen wird zusätzlich ein Nord-Süd-Gefälle deutlich. Hier ist in den süddeutschen Regionen eine höhere Zunahme des Faktors Arbeit als in den übrigen Regionen zu beobachten. Allgemein profitieren die Städte von Zuwanderung, während die peripheren Regionen mit Schrumpfungstendenzen konfrontiert sind. Eine Betrachtung aus wirtschaftspolitischer Sicht deckt den verstärkten Zielkonflikt zwischen Wachstum und Verteilung auf.

Der Bestattungsmarkt in Deutschland

Abstract

Despite its market volume of more than four billion EUR p. a. (in Germany) the market for funerals has been disregarded by economists so far. Nevertheless a burial is a high complex product involving not only an undertaker and a cemetery but also several other market actors like stone cutters, crematories and public authorities. Indeed, the providers find themselves in different market forms like a wide oligopoly in the case of funeral homes or a regional monopoly in the case of cemeteries. The abolition of legal conditions, changes in the individual way of life (e. g. a minor concentration on afterlife) and the consequences of the global financial crisis led to several changes and innovations in the market within the last years: E. g. caskets made of paper, an increasing market share of cremation in Germany and discount-funerals can be noticed. For the future we estimate a different role of the mortician. As the central protagonist he might become some kind of ‘manager’ being responsible for the complete funeral and acting as a grief counsellor for the surviving members of the family.

Ökonomische Konzepte in Robert Nozicks Rechtfertigung eines Minimalstaats

Abstract

In his „Anarchy, State, and Utopia“, Robert Nozick tried to justify a minimal state. While his theory is based on economic concepts, economists have as yet paid little attention to it. The use of economics is demonstrated by a reconstruction of Nozick’s arguments in the first part of “Anarchy, State, and Utopia”: Ruinous competition leads to a natural monopoly of the “dominant protection agency”. Externalities are used to legitimize the minimal state’s prohibition of other protection agencies. Its duty to protect all citizens can be seen as a redistributive in-kind transfer. Nozick explicitly refers to the neoclassical theory of law in his justification of the minimal state’s right to impose a deterrent criminal law. The economic concepts imply arguments in favour of the minimal state that are partly inconsistent.

The Review of Economics is also highly interested in survey articles on important policy issues.
Since the Review of Economics intends to deliver a forum for policy contributions and to influence the public debate we guarantee a quick and efficient referee process (the initial publication decision will be made within a maximum of 90 days). The editors may decide to publish papers without a referee process whenever authors send their submissions together with the referee reports and the decision letter of the previous submission and explain how they reacted to the reports. Accepted articles will be pre-published on the internet page of the journal as soon as they are accepted. Because the Review of Economics is not an e-Journal all articles also appear in a regular print version with some delay.

The Czech Journal of Economics and Finance (ISSN 0015-1920) is an English-language, double-blind refereed academic journal published in Prague since 1951. It devotes special attention to monetary economics, public finance, financial economics, and international economics, but it is open to high-quality papers from all fields of modern economics. The editors prefer empirically oriented papers, but do not exclude review articles or theoretical contributions provided that they are of high quality and relevant to the journal's aims.
