Accounting for Changing Tastes: Approaches to Explaining Unstable Individual Preferences

Abstract

Standard economic theory assumes individual preferences to be fixed and exogenously given. This view has been challenged by numerous empirical observations. In reaction to those challenges, economic theory has been modified, mostly by including additional arguments into individuals’ utility functions. Among the approaches that tackle preference change are new consumer theory, habit formation, interdependent and status preferences, social and emotional influences, and reference point-dependent preferences. Hence, while standard economics largely abide by their assumption of stable preferences, an array of alternative approaches is now available to account for changing tastes. Some of these approaches are old and have been discussed in the literature for many decades while others are younger. However, all approaches have in common that they, in some cases surprisingly, have not made it to standard microeconomics textbooks. This survey aims at putting the approaches in perspective. For each of them, empirical evidence as well as methodological issues are discussed.

Remittance Behaviour of Chinese and Indian Immigrants in Canada

Abstract

Using the Longitudinal Survey of Immigrants in Canada (LSIC) dataset, we explore the differences in remittance behaviour of Chinese and Indian immigrants in Canada in relation to their socio-economic characteristics. We apply logistic regressions on the likelihood to remit, and instrumental variable regressions to estimate the amount remitted. We find that age, income, level of education, and personal investment in the home country are important determinants of the remittance behaviour of Chinese immigrants in Canada. Marital status, having family members, and involvement with ethnic organizations in the host country are the major drivers of remittances sent by Indian immigrants in Canada. By analyzing the remittance behaviour of Canadian immigrants from two major sources, this study sheds light on potential motivations to remit which contribute to policy formulation in both home and host countries.

Net Neutrality and the Incentives (Not) to Exclude Competitors

Abstract

This paper analyses the incentives of a vertical integrated Internet service provider (ISP) to block competitors from content markets. Using a simple model we find that the ISP does not block competing content providers as long as the contents are differentiated sufficiently. Exclusion only takes place when the competitor offers perfect homogeneous content and the ISP has a local monopoly over its Internet access customers or if network effects are strong. In this case, however, the abuse of market power can at least in Europe be prohibited by competition authorities. That is, according to our model there is no need for a regulation of net neutrality.

Only articles with a strong policy focus are considered for publication. The Review of Economics will consider papers that are based on (i) a well defined theoretical model (ii) an empirical analysis or (iii) an experimental or (iv) an evidence-based framework.
The Review of Economics is also highly interested in survey articles on important policy issues.
Since the Review of Economics intends to deliver a forum for policy contributions and to influence the public debate we guarantee a quick and efficient referee process (the initial publication decision will be made within a maximum of 90 days). The editors may decide to publish papers without a referee process whenever authors send their submissions together with the referee reports and the decision letter of the previous submission and explain how they reacted to the reports. Accepted articles will be pre-published on the internet page of the journal as soon as they are accepted. Because the Review of Economics is not an e-Journal all articles also appear in a regular print version with some delay.

It devotes special attention to monetary economics, public finance, financial economics, and international economics, but it is open to high-quality papers from all fields of modern economics. The editors prefer empirically oriented papers, but do not exclude review articles or theoretical contributions provided that they are of high quality and relevant to the journal's aims.
