Sigmund von Birken, der Literaturbetrieb, Netzwerke und Werkpolitik

Abstract

Sigmund von Birken belongs to the »Trio of poets from Nürnberg«, together with Georg Philipp Harsdörffer and Johann Klaj whose posthumous fame is mainly due to their pastoral poetry with fullsounding verses in praise of peace and love. Birken started his career with an enormous upshot as organizer of multi-media spectacles during the peace ceremony in Nürnberg in 1650. Apart from his hymns and pastoral love poems, Birken’s poetry does not belong to the canon of early modern literature in Germany. If he had lived longer, he would probably have edited later all those poems which he had written on demand for special occasions and immediately published as separate brochures or leaflets in at least four huge volumes. He would have properly arranged love poems, odes in praise of friendship, poems dedicated to noblemen and civilians, hymns and secular songs, starting like his famous predecessors with his Latin verses. This ambitious publication project is outlined in his manuscript collections, but was not realized during Birken’s lifetime. To correct for this oversight, the commented edition of Birken’s complete poetic manuscripts, which was recently finished by Hartmut Laufhütte, gives a broad impression of his talents as a playful virtuoso in all kinds of genres, teacher of poetry, advisor, ›ghostwriter‹ and promotor of young poets, male and female alike. His diaries and correspondence account for his enormous productivity and versatility, thus enabling modern readers to watch him during the creative procedure more closely than any other German poet of his time. The edition of Birken’s manuscripts is on the same scale as a few other recently completed long term editions of early modern German ego-documents and poetry and sets high standards for further editions.

Abstract

The article presents and discusses the reception of physiocratic thoughts in German literary texts of the Enlightenment. It shows how intensively authors such as Tscharner, Wieland and Klinger adapted physiocratic teachings and popularised them. It demonstrates how the perception of physiocratic argument changed during the years, especially in the context of the French Revolution.

Schillers Theorien des ›tragischen Vergnügens‹ in »Über den Grund des Vergnügens an tragischen Gegenständen« und »Über die tragische Kunst«

Abstract

In his »Über den Grund des Vergnügens an tragischen Gegenständen« and in »Über die tragische Kunst«, Schiller offers two different explanations of ›tragic pleasure‹, thereby addressing two different explanatory targets. In the first of these writings, Schiller identifies positive aspects in the tragic content that serve as objects of corresponding positive emotions; in the second, he argues that certain aspects of watching tragedy are intrinsically pleasurable. Hence, Schiller’s two writings on tragic pleasure involve two different conceptions of ›pleasure‹: on the one hand, he holds that pleasure is an emotion directed towards a suitably qualified object; on the other hand, he describes ›pleasure‹ as the felt quality (›hedonic tone‹) of a broader range of mental attitudes or states. This article offers a systematic reconstruction of Schiller’s theses that includes showing that the reconstructed theses have been historically available; and it also hints at how Schiller’s theses might be evaluated.

Abstract

The concept of a New Mythology is a central topic of Early Romantic philosophy. Whereas its most influential delineations in the Älteste Systemprogramm and by Friedrich Schlegel believe a New Mythology to be impossible, Schelling takes a more optimistic view. In his Philosophie der Kunst Schelling formulates a theory of mythology which also accomodates a modern mythology. His most important examples of such a New Mythology are Dante’s Commedia and Goethe’s Faust.

Fiktive Tatsachen, ihre Relativität und deren Angabe

Abstract

The present article is concerned with the term realism. It develops an argument to distinguish between two different types: epistemically reflexive and non-reflexive realism. Wherever a fiction prompts its readers to distinguish between speaker-utterances from utterances not tied to a fictive character realism of the epistemically non-reflexive variety is at hand. Such a fiction posits a reality not to be reduced to the conceptual scheme of its fictive inhabitants. Realism of the epistemically reflexive sort indicates the relativity of the very conceptual fabric by which utterances not tied to a fictive entity give access to a fictive reality. In such a game of make believe there is, ontologically speaking, no room for the conjecture of a reality providing its fictive inhabitants as well as its non-fictive interpreters with concepts to name things as they are in themselves. How this comes to pass is shown by making use of Roland Barthes’ famous term ›reality effect‹ and subsequently illustrated by using the example of Franz Innerhofer’s novel Schöne Tage (Beautiful Days, 1975). The main argument is framed by a discussion of 19th century literary realism, on the one hand, and some concluding remarks on the potential cognitive benefits of epistemically reflexive realism, on the other hand. Whereas epistemically non-reflexive realism is a part of the family resemblance of a large portion of 19th century narrative fiction, so-called poetic realism is, according to the present article, to be considered as epistemically reflexive realism. Finally, it is argued that whenever a fiction, so to speak, loosens the connection between a fictive reality and certain concepts by suggesting the conceptual relativity of its own prescriptions to imagine certain things as fictionally true readers might be all the more willing to transfer those very same concepts into their own world.

»Born translated«?

Abstract

With the authorized edition of Henrik Ibsen’s complete works in German as a focal point, this paper analyzes the functions of authorization in the 19th century, seen in light of the European publishing trade and international copyright regulations. Special attention is paid to the conditions under which translations could precede the publication of the original text, allowing the original and its translation(s) to be published simultaneously. It is argued that Ibsen’s oeuvre, conceptualized by the author himself not simply as everything he had ever written but as a continuous and coherent whole, did not emerge primarily in the context of Norwegian or Scandinavian literature, but rather in the context of authorizing translations and the planning of a uniform German edition.

Abstract

The present article focuses on the theoretical physicist and Nobel Prize winner Erwin Schrödinger (1887−1961) and his early attempts to popularize physics in the twenties and early thirties. Special attention is drawn to the ›entanglement‹ of media prerequisites and the subject Schrödinger deals with. Exemplary analysis of the magazines in which Schrödinger published, illustrations, and Schrödinger’s rather journalistic, zeitgeisty style of writing reveals a specific way of imparting the small world of atomic physics, hidden to the eye, to a broader audience. While the majority of contemporary quantum theorists rejected the allegedly old-fashioned physics of pictures and models, Schrödinger’s popular scientific praxis of a vivid explanation is even reflected in his epistemological position regarding the central goal of theoretical physics - namely, producing clear and illustrative models.

Abstract

This article approaches Ludwik Fleck’s work from a literary perspective. It argues that Fleck is not only concerned with how scientific facts emerge, but, in accordance with his broader epistemology, with how different knowledges of reality emerge, through intra- and intercollective migrations of concepts and thoughts through different styles of thinking. Thus, in order to comprehend such cognitive traversal, interpretation, which I take to be suggested in Fleck’s work, is required. In this, I draw on the work of Andrzej Przyłębski and Dimitri Ginev, who see an implicit hermeneutics anticipated in Fleck’s work. These writings are supplemented and expanded by considering the concept of style, including Fleck’s own style, before examining what role literature, art, and language play in Fleck’s conception of thought style and thought collective. To this end, Fleck’s article »The Problem of Epistemology« from 1936, which has received little scholarly attention so far, is highlighted.

Abstract

With the term ›problem thinking‹ Nicolai Hartmann points to a core idea - not only of modern philosophy: In addition to paradoxes and aporias, there are many unsolvable problems that need to be described precisely, because they can make the limits of possible knowledge or the finding of consent in discourses visible. A literary history of problems can identify such unsolved problems in literary texts and attempt to reconstruct the historical context. This essay demonstrates this technique through the example of two of Brecht's Geschichten von Herrn Keuner.

This outline serves as basic analysis of the methods used to systematically reconstruct literary satire in the extant literary scholarship. The first section of the outline (1) contains a brief general introduction to the discussion of satire in the field of poetics. In the second section (2), which is the main concern of this outline, I discuss the four main methods used to reconstruct the concept of literary satire in recent decades.

About this journal

The yearbook has been in publication since 1997 and has the task of applying the fields of literary and scientific history to one another. In doing so, the yearbook reacts to the expansion of problems and methods which have emerged in both disciplines over the last decades. Building on the insight that literary-artistic and (natural)-scientific discourse are not two separate spheres and cannot be properly described separate of one another, the yearbook offers a transdisciplinary discussion forum for the historical analysis of the interactions between the (natural) sciences and literature (studies) in theory development and reflection from the late Middle Ages to the present. One of the topics of the yearbook is the canon of the sciences, which was founded by medieval universities and which in recent times has been expanded to include disciplines such as the natural sciences, psychology, sociology and the science of history. The field of topics chosen for the yearbook reflects a conscious decision to avoid any thematic limitations of these diverse times, disciplines and aspects.

The languages of publication are German and English. SCIENTIA POETICA is planned and structured by its editors as well as by an international committee of renowned scientists.
