Der prix de morale der Akademie von Dijon für das Jahr 1750

Rousseaus Discours sur les sciences et les arts im Kontext der akademischen Preisfragen

Abstract

The article reconsiders Rousseau’s famous Discours sur les sciences et les arts within the medial and institutional context of the prize question (prix de morale) proposed by the Academy of Dijon for the year 1750. To do so, it pays special attention to the contributions submitted by Rousseau’s (thirteen) competitors, which so far have hardly been analysed by historians of literature and philosophy. The paper also expands on the institutional and social structure of the Academy of Dijon as well as the particular profile of its morality prizes organized since 1743. In addition, the article situates the contest of 1750 in the broader context of the concours académique and outlines the evolution of the genre with its specific rhetorical traditions since the end of the seventeenth century. Thus, the crucial question, how the Academy of Dijon came to select Rousseau’s text, can be approached from a different angle. Finally, this perspective also sheds new light upon certain aspects of a major work in the history of philosophy - the Discours sur les sciences et les arts.

Abstract

In genre theory, epic, dramatic and lyric poetry are often defined in terms of the past, present or future. This association of genres and time tenses is, howewer, far from being self-evident: The idea is widely unknown before 1800. Following recent studies on time and genre, my article traces this ›time criterion‹ back from Emil Staiger to its origins in the mid-18th century and into the German and French Enlightenment’s discourses on poetry.

Expressions of the Interior: Physiognomic Knowledge in Lavater, Goethe, and Alexander von Humboldt

Abstract

This article examines the role of Johann Caspar Lavater’s (1741-1801) physiognomic ideas in shaping the relationship between the natural sciences and aesthetics at the turn of the nineteenth century. Using the examples of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s early morphological writing and Alexander von Humboldt’s Ideen zu einer Physiognomik der Gewächse (1806), it makes the case for the importance of Lavater’s »scientific« physiognomy for understanding the discursive- epistemological shift from the sensual empiricism of the eighteenth century to the perception of the invisible around 1800. Far from a direct line of intellectual- historical continuity from Lavater to Goethe and Humboldt, this article contends that the diffuse uptake of physiognomic concepts by exponents of Romantic science gave them a new meaning in relation to the study of ›life‹ and its hidden dynamics as well as with respect to the roles of art and aesthetics in comprehending nature’s ›interior‹.

Abstract

This article examines Friedrich Nietzsche’s recourse to Robert Mayer’s physical and physiological concept of release (Auslösung) in various fragments, notes and writings from the 1880ies. Nietzsche’s understanding of force can be articulated as a critic of a purely mechanical understanding of the thermodynamic law of the conservation of energy. Based on Mayer’s writings, Nietzsche describes the eruptive quantitative release of forces as a qualitative process shaped by the bodily perception of forces. The underlying feeling of force (Kraftgefühl) can be traced in biological, psychological, historical and aesthetic phenomena and is rendered by Nietzsche both anthropomorphically as will and as a universal physiological law that determines bodily, social and moral actions.

Abstract

This essay 1 documents the participation of the Würzburg professor for ›Literaturgeschichte‹ Hubert Roetteken in a series of experiments conducted by the psychologist Karl Marbe and published in 1901 as part of the research program of the so-called ›Würzburg school‹. It suggests that Rotteken’s Poetik from the following year was positively influenced not only by Marbe’s criticism of Ernst Elster’s poetics, but by his own first-hand account of Marbe’s experimental practice. The article demonstrates how this adaptation represents a change in Roetteken’s ideal of academic reading and the making of ›Literaturgeschichte‹ and contextualizes his position in the broader development of the relationship between ›Germanistik‹ and ›Psychologie‹ as evolving academic disciplines.

Abstract

The study aims to demonstrate the significance of Friedrich Nietzsche for ›Weltanschauungsliteratur‹ (ideological literature) in the early 20th century. ›Weltanschauungsliteratur‹ adopts thematic elements of Nietzsche’s cultural criticism. Nietzsche’s habitus of the outmoded academic outsider becomes important for the writers’ self-staging. ›Weltanschauungsliteratur‹ closely observes Nietzsche’s combination of philosophical reasoning and literary writing and develops it further. Finally, the article examines exemplary ›Weltanschauungsliteratur‹ by Salomo Friedländer, Theodor Lessing, Rudolf Pannwitz, and Ernst Bertram.

Ein preußischer Postbeamter oder ein postmoderner Provokateur?

Abstract

This article concerns itself with Gérard Genette’s reception in Germanophone literary study. Through an analysis of the rhetorical substrate from which Genette’s terminology draws its specific tension, the article determines that Genette is not only an excessive systematist, but also and simultaneously an author who battles received attempts at order and who foregrounds doubts about the idea of order. In this way, he displays a kinship with such theorists as Roland Barthes and Jacques Derrida. The receptions of the rhetorical construction of Genette’s texts and of the particular strategies of structuralism to which that construction refers did not occur synchronously in French, American, Russian, and German literary studies. The article demonstrates that, while German literary theory occasionally discusses Genette’s positioning within the field, there remains a general absence of the recognition that practically all of his books display a definite proximity to deconstruction, and that this proximity plays a central role in Genette’s enire theoretical edifice. This text is, last but not least, a call to read literary-theoretical texts in their aesthetic contexts.

About this journal

The yearbook has been in publication since 1997 and has the task of applying the fields of literary and scientific history to one another. In doing so, the yearbook reacts to the expansion of problems and methods which have emerged in both disciplines over the last decades. Building on the insight that literary-artistic and (natural)-scientific discourse are not two separate spheres and cannot be properly described separate of one another, the yearbook offers a transdisciplinary discussion forum for the historical analysis of the interactions between the (natural) sciences and literature (studies) in theory development and reflection from the late Middle Ages to the present. One of the topics of the yearbook is the canon of the sciences, which was founded by medieval universities and which in recent times has been expanded to include disciplines such as the natural sciences, psychology, sociology and the science of history. The field of topics chosen for the yearbook reflects a conscious decision to avoid any thematic limitations of these diverse times, disciplines and aspects.

The languages of publication are German and English. SCIENTIA POETICA is planned and structured by its editors as well as by an international committee of renowned scientists.
