Abstract

Resumen Este artículo estudia desde una perspectiva sociolingüística una muestra de 14 novelas rosa inglesas que están ambientadas total o parcialmente en las islas Canarias (España). Las obras, que pertenecen a un corpus más amplio, están salpicadas, en mayor o menor medida, de palabras y expresiones en español, ya que algunos personajes son de habla hispana. El objetivo principal del trabajo es mostrar la conciencia sociolingüística de las autoras, mediante la identificación de los mecanismos que estas utilizan para recrear el contexto bilingüe de las novelas y construir la identidad lingüística de los personajes. Tras un análisis cuantitativo y cualitativo de los textos, los datos obtenidos parecen confirmar la existencia de una conciencia sociolingüística que se expresa por medio de estrategias de representación, que incluyen el uso del metalenguaje y del cambio de código. Además, con los hispanismos recopilados aquí iniciaremos las labores de elaboración de un futuro glosario, lo que nos llevará a plantearnos el posible papel de este tipo de textos como canales para la difusión internacional del vocabulario español, dado su gran número de lectores en todo el mundo.

Expressive Speech Acts in Educational e-chats

Abstract

The category of expressive speech acts has traditionally proven elusive of definition in contrast to other types of speech acts. This might explain why this group of speech acts has been less researched. The present paper aims to redress this imbalance by analysing the expressive speech acts performed by two groups of university students in two educational chats, carried out in English or in Spanish, respectively. The main purpose of the study is to find out if students express their emotions (and which emotions) when interacting online and, if the use of their mother tongue or not affects their performance of expressive speech acts in terms of frequency and type. To this purpose, Weigand’s (2010) taxonomy of speech acts was followed, since it provides a more systematic delimitation of the traditional category of “expressive acts”. Her distinction between emotives and declaratives was thus applied to the dataset under scrutiny. Results show that students opt for performing declarative acts but refrain from expressing their own emotions in an educational setting. As for the use of English or Spanish, no significant differences were observed, which reveals that the use of their mother tongue does not seem to affect the kind of acts performed.

Abstract

Resumen El 30 de agosto de 2010 la Policía Federal mexicana detuvo a uno de los capos del narcotráfico más buscados del momento, Édgar Valdez Villarreal, “La Barbie”. Durante los primeros días de septiembre la Secretaría de Seguridad Pública difundió en los medios de comunicación masiva fragmentos de una entrevista al detenido realizada el 31 de agosto, que seguía un formato en apariencia oficial e institucional. El objetivo de este artículo es describir la entrevista a modo de protocolo en términos del mecanismo de la interacción verbal entre el entrevistador y el entrevistado y reflexionar acerca de dicho formato según el modelo jurídico de la entrevista policiaca, así como de la configuración de la identidad del entrevistado por parte de la Secretaría de Seguridad Pública. Se caracteriza esta entrevista policiaca desde tres perspectivas: una jurídica, en materia penal, una pragmática, de acuerdo con los parámetros conversacionales propios de cualquier interacción verbal y de los conceptos de fachada, identidad y estigma en la presentación de la persona, y una gramatical, respecto de las formas de las preguntas en las entrevistas semi-estructuradas. Se reflexiona acerca de la difusión de este material en los medios de comunicación como estrategia de propaganda política.

Abstract

Based on the concept of interactional competence (Hellermann, 2008; Seedhouse, 2004; Walsh, 2011; Young, 2008), our study analyzes how learners of Spanish as a foreign language in a B2 level manage repair in oral interaction in language classrooms. We understand repair as “the treatment of trouble in talk-in-interaction” (Young, 2008, p. 49). A corpus of eleven interactions between students in the classroom is analyzed through the perspective of Conversation Analysis. The interactions were collected in different kinds of tasks in the language classroom. In our analysis we compare interactions produced in practice activities and interactions collected during assessment. The findings in this study show a tendency to manage repair in classroom oral interaction as it would be done in normal conversation. Regarding the different contexts of our corpus, we observe that, in interactions produced in assessment contexts, speakers try to protect their interlocutor’s face and their own face by avoiding to make repairs.

Objective

Sociocultural Pragmatics (SOPRAG) is a biannual publication that encourages the international dissemination of research results on theoretical and applied linguistics, focusing on social and cultural aspects of the Spanish language in all its forms and expressions. SOPRAG publishes high-quality papers that are useful to establish the interdependence between pragmatic, social, and cultural aspects of the Spanish language and its relations with other languages. SOPRAG welcomes manuscripts with thematic, theoretical, empirical, and terminological aspects in the area of Pragmatics, with an emphasis on sociocultural perspectives. SOPRAG accepts original papers preferably written in Spanish, but will consider manuscripts written in other Romance languages and English.

Sociocultural Pragmatics (SOPRAG) is published in two issues, 500-page volume per year, in print and electronic formats, with a peer, double-blind, review process. The electronic format of the journal is entirely open access, without authorship charges or readership embargoes. SOPRAG is internationally indexed in databases such as EBSCO, SCOPUS, and MLA, among many others.

Sociocultural Pragmatics (SOPRAG) is published with the financial support of Vetenskapsrådet (Swedish Research Council, Ministry of Education and Research, Sweden), Stockholm University, and EDICE Program (edice.org).
