Abstract

Donald Trump’s impoliteness has caused concern in his country (and in almost every part of the globe), due the potential political and geopolitical effects of his racist, xenophobic and misogynous discourse on worldwide politics (Wodak & Krzyżanowski, 2017). In Latin America, Mexico has been the target of his offensive remarks, generating several responses in different sectors of society. In this article, we analyze the response by the Mexican Newspaper La Jornada to insults and threats uttered by Trump against Mexican immigrants and from other countries since his presidential campaign when he threatened to build a wall between USA and Mexico. Our approach rests on the assumption that impoliteness in political discourse is a political practice of (self) ideological legitimation. Hence, an analysis beyond the individual construction of the social image is essential here because, in this case, impoliteness has social, economic and political implications for the international dialogue. Departing from a linguistic, interactional and critical perspective (Bolívar, 2018, 2019) we examine the situation between Mexico and the USA through the editorials in La Jornada , seen as a space for dialogue mediated by the press. We analyzed a corpus of editorials that range from 2016 to 2020. This study reveals how impoliteness works in Trump’s political practice, and the manner in which La Jornada replies as a social actor.

Abstract

Request is a speech act which has been thoroughly researched in Spanish bibliography, especially through linguistic surveys. In this paper, request is analyzed from a new viewpoint: the reproduction of requests in direct speech. In order to undertake this research, a subcorpus made of 112 examples of direct style, which contain requests, has been compiled from a selection of corpora from sociolinguistic interviews in north-central Peninsular Spanish. Two kinds of requests have been distinguished according to their original context: on the one hand, requests produced in service encounters and, on the other hand, in interactions with close individuals. Then, the linguistic strategies used in the expression of this speech act have been classified in those more direct, which make requests similar to orders, and those more indirect, which bring them closer to offers. Based on the compiled data, the possible variations in the expression of this speech act are analyzed in the two linguistic exchanges. Furthermore, the analysis explores the possible influence of the communicative context –the sociolinguistic interview– in the verbal expression, due to the interest of the speakers to show a more formal, and appropriate for the new context, face.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to understand the use of the markers en cualquier caso , en todo caso , de todos modos and de todas maneras in scientific discourse. These discourse markers are observed in a corpus that is composed of texts from four scientific fields that represent the four areas in which knowledge is divided: Sciences, Applied Sciences, Social Sciences, and Humanities. Special attention is given to the function these markers fulfill within what is known as metadiscourse and to the use the author may make of these mechanisms to communicate with his/her future reader. Results show that these discourse markers contribute to persuade readers to a greater or lesser extent. Therefore, the obtained data justify the inclusion of discourse markers in a metadiscoursive model in order to study scientific Spanish.

Abstract

Resumen El presente artículo busca describir y analizar, desde un enfoque multimodal (Kress y van Leeuwen, 2001; Kress, 2005, 2009; Jewitt, 2009), las relaciones entre los marcadores del discurso (Martín Zorraquino y Portolés, 1999) y los memes (Knobel y Lankshear, 2005; Varis y Blommaert, 2015), a partir de una selección de memes que fueron compartidos en dos grupos de Whatsapp de estudiantes de dos escuelas secundarias de Buenos Aires. Para ilustrar esta relación, nos detendremos en el marcador ahre , marcador de gran frecuencia de uso en el habla de los estudiantes, con el fin de, en primer lugar, describir las funciones comunicativas que mantiene en los memes, y, en segundo lugar, indagar en qué medida este marcador desempeña solo una función discursiva verbal dentro del meme, o si se configura de manera autónoma como marcador-meme . Esta categoría novedosa y aporte de esta investigación nos permitirá evidenciar cómo un marcador oral puede constituirse en meme y, simultáneamente, cómo un meme puede funcionar como marcador en los intercambios en línea. Por último, discutiremos los resultados en torno al modal ontinuum (Tannen, 1982), y cómo los marcadores conversacionales en géneros digitales se inscriben como un recurso dentro del repertorio lingüístico de los estudiantes.

Sociocultural Pragmatics (SOPRAG) is a biannual publication that encourages the international dissemination of research results on theoretical and applied linguistics, focusing on social and cultural aspects of the Spanish language in all its forms and expressions. SOPRAG publishes high-quality papers that are useful to establish the interdependence between pragmatic, social, and cultural aspects of the Spanish language and its relations with other languages. SOPRAG welcomes manuscripts with thematic, theoretical, empirical, and terminological aspects in the area of Pragmatics, with an emphasis on sociocultural perspectives. SOPRAG accepts original papers preferably written in Spanish, but will consider manuscripts written in other Romance languages and English.

Sociocultural Pragmatics (SOPRAG) is published in two issues, 500-page volume per year, in print and electronic formats, with a peer, double-blind, review process. The electronic format of the journal is entirely open access, without authorship charges or readership embargoes. SOPRAG is internationally indexed in databases such as EBSCO, SCOPUS, and MLA, among many others.
