Abstract
This article questions the claim that beauty in the Old Testament has nothing to do with salvation, but exclusively belongs in the realm of the reputedly unrelated idea of »blessing«. The argument is unfolded in three steps: First, it is shown that the logical components of the concepts salvation and blessing are very alike, and from a number of texts this can also be shown to match contemporary literary consciousness. This is taken a step further by the demonstration that the motifs of blessing and salvation are intertwined in the narratives of Genesis, the liberation from Egypt, the »occupation« of Canaan and the Book of Judges, to such an extent that it is not only impossible to separate them, but also justifiable to test the claim that the motif of beauty has nothing to do with salvation. The third step consists of identifying seven Old Testament complexes where both dominant and recessive occurrences of the motif recognize a saving role for beauty. The conclusion is that this is easily overlooked when the concept is not adequately appreciated as a literary motif in terms of the redactional intention.

Abstract
The motif of help for widows and orphans is well attested throughout the ANE, but it is used quite differently in different writings. This contribution investigates these differences by first giving an overview of the ANE material and then asking how the different lines of tradition identified are continued in different parts of the OT (Wisdom and Psalms; Prophets; Deuteronomy). The investigation shows that the way help for widows and orphans is articulated reveals much about the theology/ideology of a particular writing.

Abstract
The canonization of the Pentateuch has preoccupied scholars from different disciplines from antiquity to the present. However, two major questions still require an explanation: when did it happen and why did it happen? In this two-part article an attempt has been made to clarify these issues. Based on an interdisciplinary approach, where the insights of redaction criticism are merged with archaeologically-supported historical analysis, we suggest that the inception of the Torah-canonization should be viewed within the framework of the geopolitical transformation that characterized the first half of the fourth century BCE, when, following a major Egyptian rebellion, Egypt was no longer a part of the Persian Empire, while southern Palestine became the empire’s frontier for the first time in more than a century of Achaemenid rule. The canonization of the essentially anti-Egyptian version of the Torah in the early fourth century BCE should be considered as a conscious response of Jerusalem’s priestly circles to this new reality, signaling to the imperial authorities that they are dealing with loyal subjects that consider Egypt as a world of chaos, an antithesis to the world of cosmic order, so central to Persian imperial self-understanding.

Abstract
Mount Gerizim is mentioned in Deuteronomy 11 and 27, at the two connecting points between the central core of the book (Deut 12–26) and the chapters which form its framework. Deuteronomy 11,29–30 combines names of different places where cultic activities are carried out immediately after the entrance into the land of Canaan. Gerizim and Ebal are the places where Israel has to demonstrate obedience to Jhwh after forty years of rebellion in the wilderness. Deuteronomy 27,4 poses a problem of textual criticism. The Masoretic text calls the place of the veneration of Jhwh »Ebal« whereas the Samaritan Pentateuch writes »Gerizim«. I interpret the difference as a result of productive discussions between the two cultic centres in Jerusalem and on Mt. Gerizim in Persian and Hellenistic times.

Abstract
The article seeks to prove that Jdc 2,6–10 forms a unity because of its clear composition and structure. The proximity of its language and content to texts of Deuteronomy (v. 7f) and the Deuteronomistic History (v. 6) supports the literary attribution of vv. 6–10 to the Deuteronomist. The comparison with Jos 24,28–31 shows that Jdc 2,6–10 presupposes Jos 24,28–31. The resumption of Jos 24,28–31 can be explained by Jdc 1,1–36; 2,1–5. This why Jos 24,28–31 was taken up and the contradiction in regard to Joshua’s death was accepted. The time of Joshua as the time of ideal communion with God is contrasted to the time of the Judges as the time when God was forgotten.

Abstract
Lev 19,18.34 contain the Lord’s commandment to love one’s neighbour and the foreigner »as yourself/he is like you«. In the history of interpretation most often the context was not taken into account. Rather, the explanations concentrated their attention on the meaning of the expressions »neighbour, foreigner« and »as yourself/he is like you«. The context of Lev 19,11–18 is about deceitful vengeance, that of Lev 19,33–34 about brute force against the defenceless. In this light the comparison »to love as yourself« means the impossibility to deceive one-self by cunning or to exploit one-self.

Abstract
In the history of Hosean exegesis the passage in 3,1–5 has always been problematic for interpreters. The significance of the announcement in Hos 3,4 is typically touched on very briefly and usually an exilic or post-exilic historical context is sought to fit the details. This short note approaches the evidence in v. 4 from an intertextual and intercultural angle. It argues that the declaration should not be taken at face value, as a reference to »historical« conditions, but that it should rather be regarded as a literary topos portraying a scenario of the utmost disorder.

Abstract
This study presents the results of a selective inquiry into the lexicon of LXX Canticles in contrast with papyri from the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. The aim is both to illustrate how papyrological sources may help our understanding of Greek texts from the Septuagint corpus, and to evaluate earlier findings on the lexicon of LXX Canticles and their implications for the provenance of this translation.
