Historical Causes of Regional Differences in the Predominance of Cooperative Banks – An Empirical Analysis for Germany

Abstract

The share of credit cooperatives in retail banking varies substantially across German regions. Institutional economic theory and anecdotal evidence from the history of the German cooperative sector provide theoretical explanations for these differences. For our analysis we link administrative bank data with historical as well as contemporary regional characteristics. In a county-level regression, we find evidence for both historical institutional and current economic characteristics explaining the degree of credit cooperatives’ activity. Of the historical determinants, differences in the rules of farmland inheritance and 19th century German state borders are strong explanatory factors. Résumé En Allemagne, la quote-part des coopératives de crédit dans les transactions bancaires varie beaucoup par région. L’économie des institutions et l’évidence de cas concrètes de l'histoire du secteur coopératif allemand offrent une explication théorique de ce phénomène. Dans notre recherche nous présentons une relation entre les données de l’administration des banques et les traits caractéristiques historiques et présents ainsi que régionaux. En étudiant les conditions au niveau des arrondissements, il est prouvé que le volume d’activités des banques coopératives dépend d’une combinaison de données historiques et institutionnelles et des traits économiques actuels. Parmi les influences historiques ce sont le droit de succession dans le cas des surfaces agricoles et les frontières de l’Allemagne au 19e siècle, qui constituent des facteurs solides d’explication.

Nachhaltigkeitsberichterstattung von Kreditgenossenschaften: Eine empirische Untersuchung

Abstract

Cooperative banks claim to base their management on sustainable principles and values. However, these principles are observed publicly only to a limited extent. Our article therefore addresses the following research question: Are the fundamental values and principles appropriately communicated to stakeholders? We analyse business reports of Bavarian cooperative banks and are able to show, that in many cases those banks do not adequately communicate these principles. This is inconsistent with the proven successful and sustainable business model. Résumé Selon la vue des coopératives de crédit d'eux-mêmes, leurs formes de gestion sont orientées vers des principes et valeurs durables. Cependant, ces traits caractéristiques sont souvent largement ignorés dans la perception que des tiers ont de cette identité. Par conséquent, la présente étude s'occupe de la question suivante : Les valeurs et principes fondamentaux des coopératives de crédit sont-ils communiqués de manière adéquat aux intéressés externes ? Une analyse des rapports annuels des coopératives de crédit en Bavière montre que les coopératives ne communiquent pas ces valeurs de manière suffisamment efficace pour démontrer la réalisation de leurs valeurs dans leur travail pratique, malgré le fait qu'elles disposent d'un modèle d'entreprise prône à succès, correspondant aux exigences d'une gestion durable.

Crowdsourcing, Crowdfunding, Crowdinvesting: Eine Renaissance von Genossenschaften bei Unternehmensgründungen?

Abstract

Crowdfunding has undergone incredible growth worldwide in previous years.Meanwhile many entrepreneurs use crowdfunding or rather crowdinvesting for financing within Germany. Due to the fact that crowdinvesting - as a subform of crowdfunding - and cooperatives are based on the same fundamental idea, which is “many can do more”, it could be regarded as financial alternative for cooperatives. This article explains crowdinvesting and discusses its relevance for small cooperatives currently seeking startup capital. Therefore, first a study of 80 companies, financed through crowdinvesting, was made. Second, a comparative analysis of eleven start-ups founded as limited liability companies or cooperatives was undertaken. Third, interviews with six cooperatives including three crowdinvested ones were conducted. The results indicate a growing potential for cooperatives in the context of crowdinvesting. However, cooperatives must improve their openness to digital media as well as on their reputation among entrepreneurs. Résumé Le financement participatif a connu, ces dernières années une très forte croissance au niveau mondial, de telle sorte que de plus en plus d’entreprises allemandes se financent par le biais de financement ou d’investissement participatif. L’investissement participatif, une des formes du financement participatif est basé sur le même principe que celui des coopératives „à plusieurs on est meilleur 4 '. Il convient donc d’analyser comme objet de recherche cette forme de financement dans le contexte des coopératives. Cet article traite de l’investissement participatif en Allemagne et de son importance pour les coopératives qui souhaitent acquérir un capital-création. Parallèlement à l’analyse de 80 entreprises financées par l’investissement participatif, nous avons entrepris une analyse comparative de 11 startups qui ont été fondées en tant que Sari ou en tant que coopérative enregistrée. De plus, nous avons procédé a l'interview de 6 coopératives dont 3 ont été financées à l’aide d'un investissement participatif. Les résultats montrent que l’investissement participatif représente un potentiel croissant pour les coopératives dans la mesure où celles-ci s’adaptent aussi aux nouvelles circonstances. Cela nécessite une large ouverture aux nouveaux médias ainsi qu'une meilleure connaissance de cette forme juridique auprès de financeurs potentiels.

Abstract

This paper explores the role and the potential of labour-managed firms in the case of company crises and succession planning. We review the theoretical and empirical literature and provide an overview of practical expert knowledge in Germany. On the basis of these findings we propose further research questions and carve out the potential contribution of labour-managed firms in the stabilisation of small and medium-sized firms. Résumé La présente contribution s’occupe du rôle des coopératives ouvrières de production en cas de crise d'entreprise et en cas de succession. D'abord, une vue d’ensemble de la littérature théorique et empirique est présentée et confronte les résultats de ce recherche avec les expériences pratiques gagnées en Allemagne. Basé sur cette recherche, il est discuté quand et comment les coopératives ouvrières de production pourraient contribuer à la stabilisation des petites et moyennes entreprises.

It was first published in 1950 by members of the Institute for Research into Co-operatives at the University of Erlangen. Today, a number of professors and research institutes in Germany, Switzerland and Austria are responsible for the publication.

What is the ZfgG?

The ZfgG is an academic discussion forum for the legal, sociological and economical aspects of co-operatives. Work is judged to be academic not by virtue of its origin within a university, but by its style and quality. Close contacts with the real world of co-operatives is vital.
