Abstract

In the literature concerning the appearent shapes of moving objects different methods are used. It is the aim of this paper to give a unique simple concept to treat such problems. The method used is a formal one: General definitions of the pictures taken with a plate camera or a spherical one (e. g. the eye) are given explicitely in different LORENTZ frames. The gained pictures are exactly distinct ones. On this basis some examples are treated, and the theorem concerning the appearent rotation of small objects being observed with the eye or a spherical camera (which is due to TERRELL and WEISSKOPF) is reformulated. It is shown that the LORENTZ contraction in the popular sense can be visualized only with a plate camera for sufficiently small objects in one special position of the moving object.

Abstract

At a second order transition, gap function and transition temperature of a superconductor can be determined from a linear integral equation. According to DE GENNES, the kernel of this integral equation may be obtained from a correlation function. This relation between correlation function and kernel is critically discussed. It is shown that the quantum mechanical correlation function is to be replaced by its slowly varying part, and it is suggested that the latter may be calculated from classical mechanics. The classical correlation function can be expressed as a momentum integral over a distribution in phase space developing with time according to the laws of classical mechanics. In the presence of statistically distributed impurities, the distribution function obeys the BOLTZMANN equation. Finally, the mathematical formulation of reflection properties of surfaces is discussed.

Abstract

The variation of the adiabatic invariant μ of a harmonic oscillator or gyrating particle in a time varying homogeneous magnetic field is given as an absolutely converging series. This solution is used to discuss the behaviour of the adiabatic invariant for slow and fast as well as small and large variations of the oscillator strength. General estimates are obtained for the dependence of the oscillator strength which is twice differentiable or which is analytic. For the latter case it is found that Δμ tends to zero at least as exp [ — (2 d — ε)/α] for α → 0; 2 d is the width of the analytic strip of ω (α t); α characterizes the slowness of the variation and ε is any number 2 d > ε > 0.

Abstract

Attention is drawn to the fact that perturbing terms to the HAMILTONian of the asymmetric rigid rotor molecule which are linear in the operators of angular momentum components may be evaluated to second order in the asymmetric rotor basis with the help of published line strengths tables. The usefulness is demonstrated by means of an example where the hindering potential for the internal rotation of the two methyl groups in acetone is calculated from a certain splitting in the quartet torsional fine structure of rotational absorption lines.

Abstract

It is difficult to discriminate between theories of pressure broadening of spectral lines through comparison with experiments. Line profiles are insensitive with respect to details of the theory, and it is difficult to keep experimental conditions clear and certain enough to make the comparison relevant. We used measurements of VIDAL 1 which are satisfactory from the experimental point of view. The wings of the diffuse He-lines 2P — nD are compared with those calculated by quasistatic theory. Part B deals with STARK effect splitting of the upper level. Part C describes the quasistatic theory of the line wings, and discusses the probability function of the so called micro field strength. In part D the results of the calculation are compared with the measurements. The comparison is relevant only for the violet wings of the triplet series. The red wing of the triplet lines and the violet wing of the singlet lines are disturbed by the forbidden component 2P — nP. The red wing of singlet lines is experimentally too inexact because of disturbing wings of neighboring triplet lines. The slope of the violet side of the triplet wings shows good agreement between theory and measurement for the far wing (large Δv). For decreasing Δv the experimental curve stays below the theoretical curve. For comparison of wing intensities it proves to be important to normalize the line profiles. It is seen that the measured height of the wings increases less with increasing main quantum number than the theoretical height.

Abstract

The collision-free plasma column has been investigated without a magnetic field in the normal and subnormal region neglecting wall losses. This neglection simplifies the analysis appreciably since it allows to describe the electrons by a BOLTZMANN distribution. However, in the subnormal region and in strong magnetic fields the wall loss is a decisive factor. Therefore our investigation extends the theory including this effect. Starting from the transport equations particle density and potential distributions as well as the current-voltage characteristic are found by numerical integration. With increasing magnetic field the particle density profiles grow wider whereas the potential distribution grows flatter. These effects are particularly pronounced in the subnormal region. In this region the I/V-characteristic shows a negative slope, which for a given current decreases with increasing magnetic field.

Abstract

The interaction of a plasma jet with an axisymmetric magnetic field, is calculated in linear approximation for a periodic and for a convergent or divergent field configuration. The solution depends on the MACH number, the magnetic pressure number, and the magnetic REYNOLDS number. In the convergent field, the plasma is decelerated. If the flow is supersonic, this is connected with a contraction of the jet leading beyond equilibrium and therefore being followed by an expansion. In the subsonic case, the stopping is accompanied by a broadening of the jet. With increasing magnetic REYNOLDS number, “wakes” appear which extend upstream or downstream, depending on the values of the magnetic pressure number and the MACH number.

Abstract

COHEN’S method has been used to develop the theory of cotinuous separating columns with successive exchange between three fluids. The equations of the column have been solved for stationary state and small concentrations. The general solutions representing the dependence of the mole fractions of the desired isotope in the three fluids on the column height involve the following particular cases: concurrent and countercurrent exchange between two fluids and two limiting cases of exchange between three fluids in which the intermediate fluid is at isotopic equilibrium with one of the other two fluids. As a general feature of the columns with successive exchange between three fluids it has been found that the ratio of the driving forces corresponding to the fluid pairs between which the mass-transfer takes place has a constant value along the column, excepting a zone situated at the bottom. Methods to calculate the rate constants from experimental data are given.

Abstract

The cryoscopic behaviour of Ag, Tl and Zn sulphates in a number of molten univalent nitrates has been investigated. Ag 2 SO 4 appears to be thoroughly ionized in LiNO 3 and partially ionized in KNO 3 ; Tl 2 SO 4 thoroughly in Li, Na and Ag nitrates; ZnSO 4 thoroughly in LiNO 3 and partially in Na, K and Ag nitrates.

Abstract

In a silver electrodes thermocell the thermoelectric power ε 0 at zero time of the molten salt mixtures (Ag+Li)NO 3 and (Ag+Na)NO 3 at the mean temperature of 340 °C, and of (Ag+K)NO 3 at the mean temperature of 360 °C has been measured. On the basis of these data the transport heats of lithium, sodium and potassium ions in their respective pure nitrates have been roughly evaluated. Moreover a thermodynamical ideal model for the molten salt mixtures in respect to the transport properties is suggested.

Abstract

Man kann aus Polyacrylsäure (= PAS) und Polyvinylalkohol (= PVA) dreidimensional vernetzte Folien herstellen, welche quellen, wenn man sie in verdünnten wäßrigen Salzlösungen einbettet. Diese Gelfolien dehnen sich stark aus, sobald die PAS mit NaOH neutralisiert wird und kontrahieren sich wieder, wenn man die Konzentration bestimmter Ionen in der Einbettungsflüssigkeit erhöht. Bei dieser Kontraktion kann ein Gewicht gehoben werden — es wird somit chemische Energie direkt in mechanische Arbeit umgewandelt. Durch Umkehrung dieses Vorgangs kann mechanische Energie direkt in chemische Energie verwandelt werden, d. h. es kann durch mechanisches Dehnen der Folien eine Änderung der Konzentration verschiedener Ionen in der Einbettungsflüssigkeit herbeigeführt werden. Diese Erscheinung wurde schon von GIBBS theoretisch behandelt und von W. KUHN als teinochemisches Prinzip bezeichnet. Die Gültigkeit des Prinzips wurde zunächst für das H + -Ion quantitativ bestätigt. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird seine quantitative Gültigkeit erstmals für ein Metallion (nämlich Ag + ) nachgewiesen. Es wird auch wahrscheinlich gemacht, daß beim Vorliegen von zwei aktiven Kationensorten (H + und Ag + ) für jede von beiden gesondert das teinochemische Prinzip erfüllt ist, wie dies W. KUHN voraussagte.

Formulas are derived for the calculation of surface tension and thermal expansion of organic liquids in terms of diamagnetic susceptibility, polarizability and density at a given temperature on the basis of KIRKWOODS potential of dispersion forces. The calculations are valid for normal liquids only. Abstract

Intense field ionisation mass spectra have been obtained with an A.E.I. M.S.7 mass spectrometer, used with very simple modifications to the ion source. Some features of the spectra of a variety of compounds are given and the spectrum of acetone is discussed in detail. A special feature of this spectrum is the variety of ions with a mass greater than that of a single molecule. The relatively small energy spread of the field ion source enabled resolving powers, higher than those possible with a spark source, to be obtained. Multiplets occurring in the spectra were easily resolved.

Abstract

For ferroelectric crystals with a second order transition the phenomenological theory predicts an infinite value of the dielectric constant at the CURIE-point. The highest value observed in the case of Rochelle salt is only about 10 4 . This is not caused by the methods of sample preparation or measurement but by a dispersion of the permittivity. The temperature dependence of the dielectric constant and of the dielectric modulus (dielectric impermeability) at constant frequency is examined. The influence of several relaxation mechanisms on the formation of the spontaneous polarization is discussed.

Abstract

Mit der Theorie der klassischen nichtlinearen Gitterstatik lassen sich bei lonenkristallen beliebige Störkonfigurationen im Kristallgitter atomistisch beschreiben. Die Lösung der nichtlinearen Gittergleichungen gelingt, wenn die Kehrmatrix für den linearen Anteil der Gittergleichungen bekannt ist. Die Kehrmatrix wird für lonenkristalle vom NaCl-Gittertyp aufgestellt und für die Alkalihalogenide LiF, NaCl, NaBr, KCI, KBr und KJ numerisch berechnet. Mit den Ergebnissen wird ein quantenmechanisches F-Zentren-Modell für die verschiedenen Alkalihalogenide behandelt und das gekoppelte Gleichgewichtsproblem Gitterauslenkung—Elektronenkonfiguration gelöst. Die Berechnung der Gitterverschiebungen und des Variationsparameters der Wellenfunktion für den ls-Zustand erfolgt durch Iteration.

Abstract

Es wurde die Oberflächenwanderung von Wolfram auf Wolfram mit Hilfe des radioaktiven Isotops Wolfram-185 untersucht. Für den Temperaturbereich 1700 bis 2300 °C wurde für den Koeffizienten der Oberflächendiffusion die Beziehung D=1,1 · 10 -3 exp{— 31 600/(RT)} gefunden. Die gemessene Platzwechselenergie entspricht dem nach der Methode von STRANSKI und SUHRMANN abgeschätzten Wert für den Übergang in der Fläche. Gleichartige Berechnungen für eine Reihe von Metallen zeigen eine sehr gute Übereinstimmung der berechneten Aktivierungsenergie mit experimentellen Daten aus der Literatur.

Die Diffusion von Wolfram in polykristallinem Wolfram (Korngröße 0,1—0,2 mm) wurde im Temperaturbereich 1740 bis 2100°C mit Hilfe des radioaktiven Isotops Wolfram-185 untersucht. Die Diffusion verläuft in diesem Temperaturbereich hauptsächlich über Korngrenzen und läßt sich beschreiben durch die Beziehung D=1,80·10 -3 exp{ —93 100/ (R T) } . Für die Diffusion bei hohen Temperaturen (T > 0,8 T m ) wird ein Diffusionsmechanismus über die Bildung und Wanderung von Doppelleerstellen diskutiert.

Es wurden Epitaxieschichten von Indiumarsenid auf Galliumarsenid untersucht. Dabei wurde bei 755 °C Substrattemperatur das Auftreten von Pyramiden an der Probenfläche festgestellt. Aus den Elektronenbeugungsaufnahmen kann geschlossen werden, daß es sich um Pyramiden mit {311}· Flächen handelt.

Abstract

An flüssigem Eisen wurden dicht oberhalb der Schmelztemperatur RÖNTGEN-Feinstrukturunter-suchungen durchgeführt mit dem Ziel, die Atomverteilungskurve (AVK) zu bestimmen. Die größte experimentelle Schwierigkeit bestand darin, eine hinreichend ebene Schmelzoberfläche zu erzielen. Die AVK von flüssigem Eisen unterscheidet sich qualitativ nicht von derjenigen der anderen echten Metalle und ist insbesondere der AVK des flüssigen Kupfers sehr ähnlich. Bei größeren Atomabständen ist der Verlauf der AVK wenig charakteristisch für irgendeine bestimmte Struktur. Deshalb wurde die Diskussion auf kleine Abstandswerte beschränkt. Wenn nicht extreme Verschiebungen zwischen dem mittleren und dem häufigsten Abstand nächster Nachbarn angenommen werden, läßt sich die AVK dort weder aus der einer ungestörten dichtesten Kugelpackung noch aus der einer kubisch-raumzentrierten Struktur ableiten. Hierzu müssen in diese Strukturen ganz massive Fehlordnungen eingebaut werden.

Abstract

Es wurde die Kernresonanzfluoreszenzausbeute am 1,37 MeV-Niveau von Mg 24 , das durch Neutronenbestrahlung von Na 23 in einem NaCl-Einkristall erzeugt wurde, in Abhängigkeit von der Kristallorientierung gemessen. Innerhalb der Meßgenauigkeit ergab sich keine Änderung. Rechnungen mit dem Hartkugelmodell ergaben unter Vernachlässigung des vorausgehenden β-Zerfalls für spezielle hochsymmetrische Lagen des Mg-Atoms deutliche Änderungen in der Ausbeute. Für die Deutung der Ergebnisse werden folgende Möglichkeiten diskutiert : a) Einfluß der Lebensdauer des 4,12 MeV-Niveaus von Mg. b) Einfluß von Mg-Gitterplätzen niedriger Symmetrie.

Abstract

Measurements of the MÖSSBAUER-effect were made on Calcium-Aluminate-Ferrites [2 CaO · (Al 2 O 3 ) x · (Fe 2 O 3 ) 1-x] in the temperature range 4.2 °K ≦ Τ ≦ 700 °K. Ferrites with x=0, 1/3, 1/2 were made by sintering. The isomeric-shift is the same for the three ferrites, whereas the quadrupol-splitting is a function of x : ε 1 (x=0) = (1.38 ± 0.05) mm/sec, ε 2 (x=⅓) = (1.44 ± 0.05) mm/sec, ε 3 (x =½) = (1.64 ± 0.05) mm/sec. The CURIE temperatures are Θ 1 = (615 ± 4) °K, Θ 2 = (490 ± 5) °K and Θ 3 = (398 ± 10) °K. For T=0 °K the extrapolated values of the magnetic field are independent of x : H 0 (tet) = (505 ± 10) kOe and H 0 (oct) = (555 ± 10) kOe at the tetrahedral and octahedral sites respectively. Under the assumption of an axial symmetric electric field gradient we calculated the angles between the electric field gradient and the magnetic field at the two lattice sites.

Abstract

The frequencies of the optically active lattice vibrations of carbon monoxide in the low temperature phase are calculated. The crystal structure is reported to be cubic with space group symmetry Pa3 and with four molecules per unit cell. The infrared spectrum of solid carbon monoxide at 20 °K (2000—3000 cm -1 ) given by Ewing and Pimentel is used. The molecular crystal is considered as an ensemble of harmonic oscillators, and the FG-matrix method of Wilson is applied. With the help of the F- and G-Matrices of a single unit cell, representing the interactions with 18 neighbouring unit cells too, 21 frequencies of the normal crystal and the isotopic crystals 13 CO, 14 CO, C 17 O, C 18 O are calculated. The frequencies of the translational and rotational lattice vibrations contribute to a combination band in the observed region in accord with the expected halfwidth. The calculated F- and G-matrix elements may be used for all diatomic molecular crystals with space group symmetry Pa3.

Objective
A Journal of Physical Sciences: Zeitschrift für Naturforschung A (ZNA) is an international scientific journal which publishes original research papers from all areas of experimental and theoretical physics. Authors are encouraged to pay particular attention to a clear exposition of their respective subject, addressing a wide readership. In accordance with the name of our journal, which means “Journal for Natural Sciences”, manuscripts submitted to ZNA should have a tangible connection to actual physical phenomena. In particular, we welcome experiment-oriented contributions.

Manuscripts considered for publication in A Journal of Physical Sciences: Zeitschrift für Naturforschung A undergo high-level refereeing. Mere formal correctness of a paper is not sufficient for its acceptance. Moreover, articles reporting a merely marginal extension of already existing knowledge are considered unsatisfactory. Instead, the key quality a publication in A Journal of Physical Sciences: Zeitschrift für Naturforschung A should possess is that it makes a genuine contribution to the advancement of its topic.
